Tasers are a type of electric weapon that is typically used as an incident-response device, such as in self-defense or law enforcement. They have been used in the United States since the early 1800s and were first developed by George Washington and his team at Mount Vernon. The taser was initially designed to incapacitate assailants quickly, but it has also been used for stunting or killing individuals who have become combative. In recent years, tasers have come into general use throughout the world, with some countries using them in more common than others. The International Tasing Association (ITA) currently oversees taser safety and regulation around the world. There are multiple types of tasers: those that use current to produce a short burst of pain; those that fire darts containing electricity; and those that fire pellets filled with hot gas or oil. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, which can be summarized as follows: Current weapons usually require two people to carry them, while Dart weapons can be carried by one person with help from an attendant. This gives rise to concerns about potential misuse—in particular when individuals wielding Dart weapons become unbalanced after being energized by the weapon's shocks; however, these problems have not generally arisen with other types of tasers. Gas weapons are not affected by gravity so they can be held more easily against a victim's head than oil-based devices; they tend to cause less harm if discharged over time and cause no evident damage when bursting apart over time - this makes them especially useful for aiming at small prey rather than humans directly
On October 15, 2009, the city of Baltimore announced that they would be investing in tasers as a means of reducing crime. The decision was made after a year of study which found that tasers were not only effective but also safe when used in appropriate circumstances. This announcement came after months of public outcry over the fact that officers were using excessive force against civilians and the lack of accountability for such incidents.
