Lansing, Kansas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 4,752 at the 2000 census. Lansing was founded in 1867 by James Aiken and his family, who named it for their home city of London, England. Lansing became an agricultural center during the early years of the 20th century due to its location on the Great Plains between Wichita and Topeka. In 1924, Lansing incorporated as a village and began construction on what would become its first municipal building—a two-story wood frame structure that still stands today. In 1959, Lansing annexed part of Olathe to become its second municipality and began construction on a new municipal building which would serve as both offices and civic center until merger with Olathe in 1995. During the 1990s and 2000s, Lansing experienced growth due to its strategic location near Interstate 35W and key highways such as US 54 (Kansas Turnpike) and I-70 (Kansas Highway 58). As recently as 2007, Lansing had reached 5,,000 residents living within its boundaries; however this number has since decreased since then due to suburbanization around the town center. Today there are only a few hundred residents remaining in Lansing proper while most of the town lies within unincorporated areas surrounding it including Mission Hills Mesa Park & Golf Course, White Sands Missile Range National Monument & Preserve east of town limits along highway 59 north towards Topeka which hosts one major shopping mall (The mall), Six Flags Over Kansas amusement park south of town limits adjacent to Mission Hills Mesa Park & Golf Course also hosting one major shopping mall (The Mall), Douglas High School located just southeast of town limits adjacent to Mission Hills Mesa Park & Golf Course also hosting one major school district –Douglas High School District #1 -and two smaller high schools -Dodge County Agricultural College & River Valley Community College adjacent to white sand missile range national monument northeast from town limits
Lansing was organized as a town in 1854, and it absorbed the adjacent village of Georgetown in 1857. The townsite had been surveyed by James Simons in 1837. In 1861, Lansing became the capital of Kansas Territory. It was moved to Topeka in 1907, when that state became a U.S. state.
