John Holster and his partner, Harry Weems, opened their store to provide a source for handguns for merchants and citizens alike. The business grew rapidly and by 1904 had become a well-known name in the pistol market. In 1911, Holster moved to what is now called West Side Plaza in downtown Manhattan. At this location he continued to sell handguns and carry other firearms products. In 1912 he became one of the first gun dealers in New York City when he opened up a store at 222 Fifth Avenue between Madison and Park Avenues. In 1922 John Holster passed away at the age of 87 years old after long years of service to the Pistol Industry. His son Harry took over management of the store until his death in 1951. Harry's sons Ronny and Barry continued operations until 1978 when they folded the store into BATF's ( Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms) Division which still operates today as The Gun Shop Empire located at 14th Street and Second Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in western Kansas that was founded in 1881. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, about 15 miles south of Topeka and 25 miles north of Wichita. The population of Manhattan at the 2010 census was 1,812. Manhattan is part of the Shawnee County seat. The town was named for Adam manhattan (1765-1848), an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of the 1st Battalion of Kentucky Volunteers who fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. Manhattan first appeared on maps as "New Amsterdam" in 1787 when British explorer Hugh Lawson mapped out what is now central Kansas for the French fur trader Claude Cartier. The name may have been inspired by Amsterdam in The Netherlands, where Adam manhattan had lived before his entry into service with the Continental Army during the Revolution. In 1881, Manhattan's founding fathers decided to move their village from a location on top of a hill near present day Topeka to lower ground because they found it difficult to get water to their crops from nearby hillsides. They also thought that they would be closer to friends and family in Topeka than they were currently situated. The original Mainstreet In downtown Manhattan has been preserved as one block wide and long with 4 stories tall! It still contains several businesses which are open 24/7 including: A convenience store, post office, bakery & caterer, movie theater etc... Many businesses in downtown Manhattan were destroyed or abandoned during certain stages of the Great Depression such as during World War II when many businesses were shuttered due to enemy bombing raids; however, most businesses have come back since then although some smaller ones still remain open including one restaurant that has been in business for over 150 years called The Klondike House
Manhattan, Kansas was born on November 6, 1867 in the town of Manhattan, New York. The town was named for the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam which was located on Manhattan Island. The town began to be settled by English and American settlers in the early 1800s. The first store in the town was built in 1894. The first post office was opened in 1896. The towns growth continued through the years and by 1920 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1924, the name of the town was changed to Manhattan Beach after Great Lakes Naval Base became operational at that location. In 1950, an oil refinery called K-Chem became operational in Manhattan Beach and increased production values for local businesses. However, the refinery closed down in 1984 after decades of operation and left a lasting impact on local economies. Newport News Shipbuilding also became responsible for building Navy ships at that location beginning with USS Constitution (1797) until USS Enterprise (1948). This shipyard produced some of America’s most famous warships including USS Lexington (1895), USS Constitution Museum & Maritime Hall (1986), and USS Nimitz Museum (2008).
