The museum was opened in 1984 by John A. Dahlgren, the inventor of the .22 LR rifle. It is located on a rural farm east of Wichita, Kansas. The gun protection history Museum has a collection of more than 50 guns dating back to 1853. The majority of these guns were either pistols or rifles used for hunting and protection purposes only. However, there are also a few shotguns and muzzleloaders among the collection. One of the most important pieces of gun historical evidence at the Ottawa Gun Protection History Museum is an era-old Colt Single Action Army revolver that was once owned by Major General James Hays (1821-1900). This revolver was used by Major General James Hays during his service as Commander-in-Chief, Topeka District during Indian Wars from 1875 to 1887. Additionally, another important piece of gun protection history at this museum is an American Civil War era percussion cap shotgun belonging to Captain John Wills(1851-1928). This shotgun was used by Captain John Wills during his service with Company K 2nd Kansas Infantry Regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Additionally, Captain John Wills donated this shotgun to this museum in 1928 after it had been lost in action near Corinth Bend Texas while serving with Company K 2nd Kansas Infantry Regiment under Colonel George Armstrong Custer(1863-1947).
