Ottawa, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The Town of Ottawa was founded in 1881 by settlers from Canada and named for Ottawa, Ontario. The first post office opened in 1882. In 1907 the name of the town was changed to Sedgwick after Sedgwick County, Kansas. The townsite was enlarged in 1909 and again in 1925. In 1938 Ottawa-Garden City School District No. 5 merged with Garden City School District No. 1 to form a consolidated school district which had 4 schools: Arlington Heights Elementary (grades Pre-K-5), Bellefontaine Middle (6th-12th grades), Clarkson Park High (13th-18th grades), and Senton Springs Elementary (19th-21st grades). By 1968 all but one elementary school were closed; however Bellevue Intermediate School remained open until it too closed in 1978 due to budgetary problems. Bellefontaine Middle still remains open as an annexe to Clarkson Park High today as Bellevue Junior/Senior High School #2A The last primary school closed in 2006; however high school students continue to attend Carver Community High School which also has an annexe called Carver Jr./Sr.) currently serving Grades 9-12
