Ottawa, Kansas is a small town in Hutchinson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a post office in the community. The first European to visit Ottawa was Captain James Cook on his second voyage around the world in 1768-1769. He named it "Canobia" after his home country of France. A post office called "Ottawa" was established in 1887 and remained in operation until it closed in 1960. In 1907, Ottawa annexed part of neighboring Hutchinson County to form a new municipality. The village of North Toronto was incorporated as a separate city with its own police department and school district. This merger never occurred because North Toronto's mayor refused to give up control of their city hall and fire department to Ottawa. In 1938, part of Ottawa west of Main Street became an independent township under the name “Ottawa Township” for white citizens only due to anti-miscegenation laws then still prevailing in America; however this township did not exist when City Limits were established later that same year by an act of the Wichita Congressional District Legislature as per requirement set out by territorial boundaries drawn up following World War II based on Enabling Act legislation passed by Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency

James Wylie, a Scottish-born settler, bought the farm in 1851 and made it his home. He had five children and ran the farm with help from his wife and other family members. In 1865, Wylie sold the property to John Clementson, an American Civil War veteran who also founded what is now Wichita Falls, Texas. Most of Ottawa were abandoned during World War II because of its strategic location as a rail junction between Kansas City and Omaha.
