Ottawa, Kansas is a small town located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 597 as of the 2010 census and it is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Ottawa's downtown is home to the Ottawa Civic Center, which houses a library, community center, and several businesses. The city also has two high schools: Ottawa East High School and Ottawa West High School. In 1896 Chief Wilbur Griggs came to live in Ottawa with his family from Topeka following his purchase of the Griggs rancho known as Rancho Santa Fe de la Paz y San Angelo de los Bueyes y Tejas from Hidalgo County Mexican Landowners Association for $847 cash plus costs of travel & subsistence. In 1898 he donated land east of town on Brush Creek for what became K-State University while he lived there until his death on May 12th 1901 at age 86 years 5 months & 46 days after being appointed Clergyman-Governor Of Wichita By Govt Of Kansas under act entitled "An Act To Appoint A Governor For The Territory Of Wichita". On November 3rd 1912 Mayor John Waddell dedicated Queen's Park Square at corner of 11th Street South & Dodge Avenue North asthe new site for City Hall following an $18 000 donation from Mrs A E Niven who served as mayor between 1911-1912 when she was unsuccessfully opposed by Mayor Stephenson over control of City Hall finances On December 8th 1916 voters approved an amendment to the Kansas Constitution giving city status to Ottawathe same day that they did an amendment granting county status to Sedgwick County Utah Territory leaving Ottawathe unincorporated territory with no municipal services or voting rights apart from special meetings held at City Hall where ordinances were passed without discussion or opposition only 4 times between 1902-1984 In 1951sex years after its incorporation into Wichita the city limits were expanded beyond its original boundaries by annexing much of Sedgwick County including present day Anaconda Township along with parts of 7 other townships within Wichita including Lawrenceburg Heights just across Spencer Boulevard from original Otawatomie Town Limits . While much has changed since then such as growth rates in surrounding communities such as Topeka (+25%) and Anaconda (+30%), most noticeable changes have been corresponding gentrification trends seen throughout Wichita with many predominately white neighbourhoods becoming majority black or Hispanic neighborhoods
