Today, many businesses from both before and after annexation still operate within City limits including Kwik Trip convenience store (opened 1997), Ford dealership (opened 1974), Applebee's restaurant (opened 1998), Subway sandwich shop (opened 2003), Sears store (closed 1994) as well as numerous other local businesses which contribute significantly to downtown or “the business district” which includes most of downtown’s blocks between First Street South and Main Street North - complete with several high-end restaurants/cafes/nightlife spots along with near-daily parking garages available for customers utilizing meters located just east across First Street North from Sweetwater Tavern public house - this district also offers excellent public transportation options into downtown via light rail on Avenue Q which runs parallel to Main Street North; all told, “the business district” provides about half of all retail storefront space used by Ottawans within city limits - this makes for an active commercial environment that helps keep Ottawans engaged day & night even during slower times & helps attract more visitors who want to stay here longer while exploring our great location!

This created an important transportation corridor northward along what is now I-435 between Lawrence and Wichita; one that continues to be important today when highways serve as primary arteries connecting those cities and their metropolitan areas
Ottawa, Kansas was first settled in 1854. The town was platted by a group of men led by James Bowie and named after the Ottawa River. In 1857, the town became the county seat of Scott County. The population of Ottawa grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching over 2,000 people by 1912. In 1924, Ottawa merged with neighboring Lawrence to form the city of Lawrence.
