The first settler in Pittsburg was James Cook who moved there from Ohio in 1858. He and his family built a cabin on an east-west road that led to what is now Pittsburg. In 1861, after the Sackettsville Massacre, the U.S. military burned down all of the cabins in Pittsburg because they were considered nuisances and "a factor in annoying Union settlers." In 1872, John Witherspoon opened a grocery store at the intersection of US Highway 26 and State Road 6A (now US Highway 169). Witherspoon became known for his corned beef sandwiches which he sold from his store until he died in 1922. One of Witherspoon's sons continued to operate the store for many years before it closed in 1994. This location served as home to Wichita State University until its move to Lawrence, KS in 1997 when KSU's new main campus was built nearby. In 2002, Wichita State University agreed to sell its land near Pittsburg so that Topeka could build an arena for their basketball program and also construct a new performing arts center which would house both music and dance performances by Wichita State alumni and otherlocals as well as hosting high school sports events throughout the year
Pittsburg was a small town in Kansas City, currently a ghost town. Pittsburg was founded in 1881 by John and Jennie Pitts, who came from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Pitts owned a small mill and store in the city before moving to Pittsburg in 1887. They raised four children there and developed a strong local community feeling. The Pitts sold their business in 1935 to take up farming outside of the city limits. In 1938 they moved back into the city but closed their store that year due to financial difficulty. They later reopened their store as an antique shop before selling it in 1966 to move out of thecity limits altogether.
