Prairie, Kansas is a small town in the central US state of Kansas. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Arkansas River and is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The post office in Prairie was established in 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1978. The first settler in Prairie was George Hutton, who arrived with his family from Massachusetts on October 15, 1871. Hutton named his land Prairie after the prairies he saw near his home in England. In 1875, John McDonald settled along the Arkansas River and named his land Prairie after Illinois congressman Peter Klinkenborg. McDonald had come to Kansas to farm and find a place to seat a railroad station so that he could provide transportation for goods coming westward from Chicago through Wichita. In 1907, when Wichita became an incorporated city, its citizens voted to name their town "Prairie." The name stuck and Prairie has since become one of the most popular small towns within Wichita's borders. According to the 2000 census,[1] there were 1,814 people living in Prairie as of 2000; 237 (or 9%) were Native American; 424 (or 23%) were white; 2 (or 0.04% of total population) were black or African American; 3 (or 0.03% of total population) were Asian Pacific Islanders; 7 (or 0.07% of total population) were Hispanic or Latino;; 152 (or 5%) self-identified as transgender.[2][3] Hispanic/Latino residents are more likely than other residents to have Spanish surnames.[4] As of 2010[5], there had been no reported cases of violence against any minority group inside or outside of town limits since 2007 when local police began tracking such incidents.[6]

Consequently, within 10 years after Napoleonic France's victory over England at Waterloo (1815), most major continental armies consisted entirely of infantry units equipped with rifle fire rather than cannonballs or bowsand arrows

Prairie was founded in 1881 as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and named for the prairies of central Canada. The first post office in Prairie was established in 1882. Prairie has been continuously inhabited since that time and currently has a population of about 1,500 people. The first settlers to Dakota Territory were led by Captain James Fergus who arrived on horseback from Fort Bridger on July 5, 1872. He and his men built the first permanent settlement at what is now known as Prairie on November 10, 1872. It was located on what is now known as the east side of Elm Street near present day Haskell Boulevard. Captain Fergus and his men did most of the construction themselves with only nine men working all week to complete their goal of creating a village off the hostile prairie surroundings they were living in. The early residents here included Mr. and Mrs. John Hargrave from Lancaster England who came overland from Missouri City on October 8th, 1875 with their four children age 12 months through 3 years old including future Governor George Wirtz’s brother James who also crossed the plains that year as an infant trainee with his father Major General Wirtz (1824-1912). They settled down around Hastings Road east of present day Elm Street which later became known as Hargrave Drive after them Harlot House stood until 1903 when it burned down but it served as one of few local hotels during this time period In 1907 two brothers by the name of Averill bought land just north of Hastings Road and started building what would become Averill School which stands today across from Prairie Middle School still serving students today Averill Agricultural Experiment Station was also established here in 1907 which specialized in seed production During World War I there were several military encampments set up along or near present day Hastings Road including Camp Dodge where soldiers cooked their meals before departing for various engagements Although most people avoided this area because it had been contaminated with gas warfare munitions used during those hostilities many farmers decided to situated there because they needed some protection against possible attacks by Arabia or any other nation . After war ended officials began moving back out into open country but some remained behind due to health concerns such as rustling cattle being heard close at night
