In 1795, Shawnee Chief Joseph led an attack against a band of Kiowa warriors that had invaded their territory; this event is often considered the beginning of the Dakota War. The first white settlers in Shawnee arrived around 1855; they were farmers who purchased land from local Indians. By 1870, many miles of Indian country had been bought and developed as farms and towns by white men and women. After Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Shawnee lost much of its economic importance because it was included within Oklahoma’s borders. However, since then it has become an important cultural center for its indigenous community, which continues to produce some of Oklahoma’s best cheese. Economically, Shawnee has always been relatively dependent on agriculture; until recently there was no industry other than farming or ranching.
