Winfield is a small town in Kansas, located about 25 miles south of Topeka. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. The community is named after General Winfield Scott and his wife Julia Child. It was founded in 1859 by James A. Armstrong and Sprucey Silliman, two settlers from Illinois who had come to Kansas looking for land to purchase. The town was first called " Armstrong's Mills", but it changed its name to Winfield in 1864 when it became known as the location of Scott's army encampment during the American Civil War. As part of the Compromise of 1850, Winfield had been given a strip of land lying east of Wichita that included what is now the city of Overland Park. In addition to Scott's army encampment, other early residents include Isaac Newton Phelps (1827-1912), who built Phelps Mill; John Dickson (1828-1920), who established Dickson & Co., one of the first general stores in Kansas; and Myron Cope (1834-1911), author and founder ofKansas City Star newspaper fame. In 1881, Winfield began receiving mail from over 800 farmers in neighboring towns across Nebraska Territory. This led to the establishment of a post office in Winfield on April 14th that year by Jno Witherspoon with help from President Ulysses S Grant and George Stephenson. At this time, only 3 or 4 miles wide path separated these communities with no railroad facilities available nearby so communications were slow and often frustratingly unreliable. However, within just 10 years or so, communication between these small towns had grown into an massive network with steamboats carrying goods upriver through Topeka Lake to market outlets at Belltown Landing on the edge of Topeka City Limits before being conveyed downriver again via boat back upstream for shipment onward again all week long! Today, Winfield remains an agricultural community - primarily corn farming - with numerous businesses providing local services such as schools (WinFIELD Jr./Sr High School) water systems (West Side Pipeline Company), law enforcement (Sheriff's Office), ambulance service (St Joseph Ambulance Service), firefighting/rescue services (City Fire Department) as well as nearly every imaginable type of craft necessary for day-to-day life: power generators for homes & businesses (& more); ice cream vans running 24/7; 7 convenience stores including Two Guys Ice Cream Parlors which opened late last year...the list goes on! There are also several golf courses within close proximity including Highland View Golf Course which borders Onawa County on one side while Garden Hills Golf Course fronts Elkhart County on another; both offer excellent real estate opportunities should you decide to make this your permanent home!
