Bardstown, Kentucky is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern Kentucky. The population was 17,859 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is one of three towns in Jefferson County and is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The other two towns are Latrobe and Prestonsburg. The community was founded by members of the Presbyterian Church in 1814 as a trading post on the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. The name "Bardstown" means "site where young shepherds rest." In 1827, John Cranch purchased land here from George Rogers Clark for $5 per acre. Bardstown became an agricultural center after it was given a gold mine in 1870. Today, Bardstown's economy relies primarily on its mineral resources, such as coal and oil shale. Baird School District No. 1 encompasses much of Bardstown; it serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade from majority white neighborhoods within 2 miles (3 kilometers) of its facilities along Ulysses Road (Route 6). A large percentage (almost 60%) of households in Baird School District No. 1 have incomes below poverty line set by HUD guidelines which prohibits discrimination against low-income families with children age 3 or younger

Bardstown, Kentucky, is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, located on the Ohio River. The population was 3,780 at the 2010 census. Bardstown was founded in 1792 by Welsh refugees who had fled to the area during the French and Indian War. In 1814, Bardstown became a county seat of Jefferson County and has remained that way ever since. The town is considered an important cultural center for western Kentucky and its history can be found throughout its downtown district which includesState Street between Market and First Streets as well as Third Street south of State. The first settler in Bardstown was Captain David Simpson who arrived there in 1792 with his family from Northumberland County, England. Captain Simpson built a log cabin onpresent day State Street near where he later died. He is buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Bardstown. The next year saw another group of British refugees arrive at the mouth of the Ohio River and they too set up camp here until 1800 when they moved upstream to take up land east of present day Lebanon Junction where they founded Clinton County (now Posey County). In 1814, Jefferson County was created from parts ofFeaturedo counties when it was created from Wade Parish (later part of Anderson Parish) following France's Invasion of Kentucky during the Mexican-American War. At that time much of what is now eastern Jefferson County lay within Spanish Louisiana including present day Bardstown along with most or all present day Posey Counties including Lebanon Junction and Sandersville (renamed Harper Valley after James Harper Sr., oneofthe original settlers). When Jeffersonshire became a county it included most or all these lands making it one of the largest county formations in Kentucky history. In 1824 Randolph Jackson bought land adjacent to present day downtown Bardstown from John Silliman for $1 cash only thereby founding Jackson & Silliman mercantile firm which operated here until 1865 when it merged into Scranton & Reno mercantile firm which continued operation until 1925 when it merged into that company's successor American Mercantile Company which still operates today as America's 5th largest commercial business institution in Greater Cincinnati proper! The early days were tough for this small town as there were no roads or rails yet people traveled by water transportation either downriver to Cincinnati or overland via Louisville & Nashville respectively! However things changed with enactment by Congress under President Andrew Johnson on May 1st 1865 Of The Kansas–Nebraska Act which granted legal validation to our statehood movement! This act also provided funds necessary for construction/operation of our new state boundary line so 2 years later we all had our perfect little community!! However due to numerous floods that hit this area beginning about 1830 various homes were destroyed even though lots had been given away!!!! No matter how hard people tried rebuilding happened but always without financial help!!!!! From then through 1860’s many famous individuals lived here including General Sterling Price who served during both Civil War era Battles Of Perrysburg And Chickamauga; Governor Donelson; Congressman Thaddeus Stevens; Mayor James Fenton; popular singer Forrest Gump etc etc etc…. It wasn’t just small businesses however some very large ones such as Pabst Brewing Co.; American Iron Works Ltd.; National Coal Mining Co.; Cumberland Coal Mines Incorporated etc…..this community played host to countless social events such as weddings receptions funerals balls parties picnics golf tournaments baseball games horse racing track racesetc…..it truly WAS THE PLACE TO BE!!!Today if you go around downtown you will see many reminders remaining from those BYO days like old post office building(currently home to several private firms); Multiple art galleries containing works by local artists; antique stores selling everything from 19th century clothing items up through modern appliances including dishwashers;; restaurants serving up everything FROM AMERICAN WINGS TO SOUTHWESTERN KYROISTS……..and yes even THAI LADIES ARE NOW PLAYING IN DAILY LIFE DURING MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON!!!
