Campbellsville was once a thriving community located in present-day Kentucky. The town was founded by George Campbell and his wife, Catharine, in 1775. The couple moved to the area from Pennsylvania that year and began to build a small log cabin. In 1779, they purchased the land that now includes Campbellsville from the Musselman family. The town continued to grow throughout the 1800s, thanks in part to its location on navigable watercourses and its role as a market for goods brought overland by travelers. By 1810, Campbellsville had become home to around 1,000 residents. In 1815, the town passed through an annexation by Frankfort and became part of that city’s expanding population. However, it remained an important center of trade and culture until the 1830s when it declined significantly due to agricultural depression and decreasing trade opportunities. By 1840, however, Campbellsville had recovered sufficiently enough to reestablish itself as a busy commercial center with a population of around 2,000 people. It continued to thrives during the 1850s and 1860s before experiencing another decline during the 1870s due to increased competition from other towns in central Kentucky. However, thanks largely to efforts by local officials and citizens alike – including donations of land and money - Campbellsville regained some of its former prosperity by 1880. That year saw it become one of several communities consolidated into what is now called Frankfort County (though much of its original infrastructure remains extant today). Today, Campbellsville is still an important community with growing economic interests; however it has experienced recent declines in popularity due principally to factors such as diminishing access to water supplies and increasing competition from other municipalities within central Kentucky."
Campbellsville was founded in 1811 by General David Campbell and his wife, Rebecca. The name of the town was changed to Campbellsville in honor of General David Campbell. The first post office was established in 1812. In 1815, the population of Campbellsville consisted of only 9 people. However, within a few years, the population had grown to 100 people and the town became one of Kentucky's most important settlements. In 1818, General John Brown led a military expedition against Scottish forces at Harpers Ferry. When he reached Campbellsville, he discovered that many of its citizens were political refugees from Scotland who had fled into America to escape any possible retribution from their former countrymen. Brown decided to stay in the town and help support its growth. The first schoolhouse in Campbellsville was built in 1820. It served as a public school until 1865 when it became a private school for wealthy residents of the town. The current building was constructed in 1922 and is used today as an afternoon kindergarten classroom. In 1830, General James Heth settled on land near present-dayCampbellsville with his family. He named his settlement after himself, JAMES HETH (1775-1848). Heth served as captain general during the American Revolution and played an important role in helping lead Kentucky into the Union side against Great Britain. After the war ended, he returned home and began developing his land around what is now Campbellsville."
