The town of Covington, Kentucky was founded in 1785 by John Covington. The name comes from the Welsh word for "oak tree". John and his wife, Elizabeth were the first people to settle in this area. After much hard work and determination, they built a small cabin on what is now State Route 21. This small settlement soon became known as the "Covingtons' Corner" because of its location near points of interest in the surrounding countryside. Over time, other pioneers joined the Covingtons in their efforts to make this corner of Kentucky their own. They started a school, built a store and began to form a community. By 1820, Covington had become an important center for trade and commerce in central Kentucky. It also boasted one of the most successful churches in that region at that time! In 1828, John Covington died suddenly at the age of 73 years. His widow continued to live in Covington until her death in 1868. A few weeks later, her son-in-law James Muhlenberg took over management of the town's affairs and served until his death in 1886. During his tenure as mayor, he made many advancements for Covington including improving infrastructure such as water systems and creating new streets and buildings! He also helped develop several local businesses such as The Hinterland Brewery and J & L Foods! After James Muhlenberg's death, control passed through his family until it passed away again when James' grandson Ernest Ownby took over leadership position In 1951. Ernest held office until he was succeeded by his daughter Bernice Ownby who served until 1988 when she retired effective July 1st due to health problems associated with dementia! At that point control reverted back to the descendants of James Muhlenberg with Bernice serving as acting mayoruntil her retirement on January 1st 1997 which ended 66 years of continuous leadership !! Today there are over 100 active citizens living within easy reach of each other within walking distance or drivingdistanceof both stores and church ! There are also numerous parks along side State Routes 21A&21B providing plenty of recreational opportunities !!!

The town of Covington was founded by James K. Polk in 1879. The post office at the corner of Weldon and Market Roads was established in 1881, and the first public school was opened in 1886. The village of Covington grew up around the town's two churches: First Presbyterian and Methodist. In 1914, a fire destroyed most of the brick buildings in the village center, but new buildings were erected soon afterward. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson visited Covington for a speaking engagement at the First Presbyterian Church. He delivered a speech there that has been cited as one of his most famous speeches. Since then, many businesses have been located inCovington - including restaurants, nightlife, and manufacturing plants - making it an important cultural center for southeastern Kentucky.
