Covington is a small town in Adair County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Covington was founded by Methodists in 1787 as an agricultural settlement on the east bank of Covington River. The original name for the community was "New light." In 1810, it became known as "Coventry." The first school in Coventry was built in 1790 and operated by subscription. A second school was built by subscription in 1813 and operated byprivate individuals until 1819 when it became a public school with government funding. In 1825, the town voted to change its name to "Coventry" after Bishop John Coventry of Louisville who had donated land for the community. In 1830, two brothers named Joshua and John Pemberton bought a small piece of land on which they erected a log cabin which served as their home until 1840 when they moved to what is now downtown Coventry. They were followed by their father-in-law Andrew Duffield who also purchased land and began construction on what would become his largest brick structure – the first courthouse in Kentucky – which opened in 1841. 2 years later, another brother named Daniel Carson purchased from Andrew Duffield three acres (1 km²) of land near present day Main Street and High Street which he used for growing corn and raising pigs until 1850 when he sold all his property to Jno Haggerty who destroyed most of it but left some large fields that remain today including Society Hill Cemetery where Mr. Haggerty lived during much of his life before passing away in 1901 aged 92 years old; this location is still home to one family’s pig farm). In 1861, Mr Robert Ewing organized a group of farmers called “The Masons” into which he contributed $5 per week towards building schools for poor children within 25 miles (40 km) radius of Coventry so that these children could receive education while working on their farms during harvest time instead of going off to work without any safety net or training whatsoever. This early effort planted the seed that would eventually lead to Postsecondary Education being offered through local colleges/universities throughout Kentucky today! A local resident named Elijah Denton donated 4 acres (16 ha) west side OF Main Street between High & Second Streets where he had been living since 1800 with his family running a ferry service across Covington River connecting Upper & Lower Townships via his property upriver from where they grew tobacco etc.. He gifted this location permanently known as Denton's Landing back TO THE COMMUNITY IN 1937!
