Covington was founded in 1788 by Captain John Covington and his family. The city became a vital stop on the Underground Railroad, helping many slaves escape to freedom. After the American Civil War, Covington experienced a period of growth and development. Many new businesses were founded in the city and its surrounding areas, such as an aluminum smelter, a paper mill, and a chemical plant. In recent years, however, Covington has seen some revitalization efforts that have brought about new businesses and residents. Despite this progress, however, Covington remains a struggling town with high levels of poverty and crime.
Covington was founded in 1791 by Captain James Covington and his wife, Lois. The first European to settle in the area was French Jesuit Father Antoine de la Salle. In 1813, General David Robertson burned down the courthouse in Covington after a heated argument between citizens and the military about taxation. The government rebuilt the courthouse in 1819. Covington became an important transportation and trade center during the antebellum period because of its location on the Kentucky River. During this time, it also served as a stop on stagescoops traveling between Louisville and Nashville. In 1825, John Marshall built a log cabin near present-day downtown Covington to serve as his home while he defended himself against charges of treason brought against him by President James K. Polk. After Marshall's defense failed, he moved into his cabin and continued to live there until his death in 1831. In 1830, General Elijah Muhammad founded black nationalism in Covington when he preached at the First Baptist Church there. He later moved to Cincinnati and changed its name to Nation of Islam (NOI). In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Kentucky with 8,000 men looking for rebels stationed around Louisville under Confederate general Robert Ewell Jackson. Early reached Covington early that morning but wasdetailsly defeated at Battle of Perryville outside town Limits on November 11th 1865 before entering into town limits again two days later and succeeding at Battle of Ashland which ended Early's campaign within six hours after starting! 2nd Brigade 3rd Division Army Corps Confederate States Army
