Elizabethtown, Kentucky is a small town located in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. Elizabethtown is one of two planned towns in Breathitt County and has been since 1892. The first residents of Elizabethtown were people who had come overland from Tennessee in 1819. They named their new settlement after Elizabeth, the sister of King George III of Great Britain. By 1830, the town had grown to about 500 people and it was renamed Elizabethtown after Queen Victoria's visit to America in 1835. In 1853, a post office was established in Elizabethtown and it continued to be used until 1907. In 1912, a water line was built from Tellico Lake intoElizabethtown and by 1915, all businesses within the town had been built or were expanding their operations. By 1920, most residents were employed within the factories and mills located within easy walking distance of each other. However, during World War II many jobs went overseas and as a result the population declined rapidly; however by 1970 it had recovered somewhat to its pre-war level (9,895). Most important economic sectors have been manufacturing throughout much of Elizabethtown's history including textiles (factory), food processing (processing plants), lumber (lumber yards), paper products (printing works) and aluminum production beginning in 1945 when Aluminum Corporation Of America moved into an old mill complex on Tellico Boulevard for their American Paper Products plant which became known as The Alamo according to nearby street signage still extant from that era; but most notably transportation with trucks running down Main Street carrying goods between local warehouses/factories along with automobiles offloading materials at local garages providing access to much needed Lexington traffic gridlock during rush hours! Elizabethtown, Kentucky is a town in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. Elizabethtown is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has been a trading post and mill town since its founding in 1792. The first inhabitants of what is now Elizabethtown were Shawnees Native Americans. A post office called Elizabethtown was established in 1792, and remained in operation until 1847. The first settlers were aristocrats from Virginia who purchased land around what is now Elizabethtown for $10 per acre. They named the community after their patron saint, Elizabeth of York (1558-1627). The original millrace running through the town served as an important transportation route for goods arriving by boat or train from points northward. During the American Revolution, many men and women fought for independence on behalf of the colonies including Colonel James Wolfe who led an army into northern England to take possession of Quebec City before returning home to fight against British forces under King George II – one of only two military engagements that ended successfully with no British casualties during the war (the other being Royal Navy officer John Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga). Wolfe's victory helped secure independence for America and helped bring about changes within Britain that would later lead to World War I. In 1817, General Andrew Jackson took command of Union troops invading Tennessee and started its longest military campaign ever - an occupation that lasted more than two years and left over 100 thousand soldiers dead or wounded. During his Army career Jackson was known as "The Broad Bottom Bomber" because he frequently attacked targets with napalm without warning his troops before detonating them near inhabited areas in order to cause maximum destruction while minimizing civilian casualties After leading Confederate forces during the Battle of Perryville outside Louisville on October 8th 1864 Ulysses S Grant emerged as victor over Robert E Lee resulting in General Sherman's march through Georgia en route to join up with Union troops marching through Alabama towards Nashville which opened up another opportunity for Reconstruction throughout much of America following Civil War
Elizabethtown was founded in 1781 by Revolutionary War hero, General James Wilkinson. The town was named for the Virginian Duchess of York, who had come to Kentucky to help support the American Revolution. The town quickly grew and became a major center for trade and commerce. In 1814, Elizabethtown became the capital of Kentucky after it was moved from Lexington. It remained as such until 1861 when Louisville became the new capital.
