The history of ammunition in Georgetown, Kentucky dates back to the early 1800s. Ammunition was a critical part of military and civil arsenals throughout the United States, and because of this, there is a wealth of Ammunition History Museum artifacts on display in the city. One of the most famous buildings in Georgetown forcontaining an ammunition museum is the old arsenal building located on State Street. The building was built in 1802 by Colonel John Covington for his gunsmith shop. It served as garrison headquarters for Fort Washington from 1814-1821, and later housed artillery batteries at various times during its history. The first fire arm store in Georgetown opened its doors in 1815 and soon became one of the largest such stores east of the Alleghenies. This store was replaced by another store on State Street in 1825 after it burned down. In 1827, local citizens raised money to build a new arsenal building which would serve as both fire arm storage and post office. The new arsenal building was completed in 1830 and served as such until it was destroyed by fire in 1840. It reopened under different ownership before being sold to Mr. Gooding & Sons munitions merchants who operated it until 1945 when it closed again due to lack of demand for ammo products among shooters across America during World War II. Georgetown is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. Georgetown is located on the north bank of the river Caney, about 10 miles east of Lexington and about 15 miles south of Frankfort. The community was platted in 1847 by George Washington Carver, who named it after Georgetown College in Maryland. The Carvers were descendants of Nicholas Carver, one of President James K. Polk's "Four Georges". George Washington Carver attended Georgetown College from 1848 to 1850 and graduated with a degree in Agriculture. He then worked for six years as a teacher before beginning his own agricultural business in Georgetown in 1854. The original buildings still stand today: the old school house (now used as a hotel), Mr. & Mrs.'s house (now an apartment complex), and the Carpenter home (now a museum). In 1868, Georgetown became part of Paducah County when that county was created from parts of Pike and Daviess counties. In 1908, Paducah County merged with Grayson County to form Clark County; but because Grayson had already designated Georgetown as its capital city, this designation didn't take effect until 1909 when Clarksville became its new capital city/county seat. In 1911, Georgetown was annexed by Frankfort; but because Frankfort did not have any municipal services or water supplies available to it at that time, it reverted back to its own government within two years. The first post office was established at Georgetown on October 6th, 1847 by order of Governor Donelson Ballentyne*. The first settlers to Georgetown were Ulster Protestants who arrived from Ireland in the mid-19th century. They built their homes along the east bank of the Wabash River and developed a commercial district around what is now downtown Georgetown. The early residents were very religious and attached great importance to education and proper morality; they subscribed to Methodist, Episcopal, Baptist and other denominations. In 1875, when Kentucky became an open service state (it had been closed since 1861), Georgetown voters passed a resolution calling for its incorporation into the new state government as a town with full powers to elect its own officials The growth of Georgetown during the 19th century was due largely to two factors: its location on navigable waterways which made it easy to get goods Ships coming upriver stopped at Georgetown’s wharves; also, because there were few other settlements withinJefferson County other than those established by pioneer families such as James Biddle and William Harrison Sr., Georgetown quickly became one of the most important economic points in eastern Kentucky
Georgetown, Kentucky was founded on October 25, 1775, when a small group of settlers, led by Captain John Forbes, laid the foundations for the town. The town was named in honor of General George Washington. Georgetown grew rapidly and soon became a bustling community with many businesses and homes. The town was renamed from its original name of Midleton to Georgetown in 1824 in order to distinguish it from other towns in the area that were also called Midleton. In 1859 Georgetown was incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of the larger cities in Kentucky.
