He built a log cabin on the present site of Georgetown University and named it Covington Heights after himself and his brother-in-law Nicholas Keyes. Henry Clay came through Georgetown on his way to Lexington in 1802 to campaign for Ulysses S. Grant and stayed four days at Covington Heights before continuing on his journey. In 1817, John Ritchie moved to what is now Georgetown and started a farm that produced corn, wheat, pork, beans and other food products for local residents and markets throughout southeastern Kentucky. In 1840, Jno.[sic] Denny founded Denny's grocery store on Wilson Avenue in downtown Georgetown which became one of the largest grocery stores west of the Allegheny Mountains. The store continued operation until its closure in 1984. In 1935/36 Louisville entrepreneur W[illiam] L[ouisville] H[eineman], Sr., began developing land east of downtown into what would become known as "Georgetown Arsenal" (now just around the corner from McGowan Hall). He planned to build a large industrial park with housing and retail businesses near the airport but never got past planning stages because of World War II military activity around nearby Fort Knox In 1950s/1960s there was heavy industry development with several companies such as American Electric Power (AEP) investing here Historically significant buildings include: McGowan Hall; Georgann Church; School House #1; School House #2; Administration Building #1 (later used as a post office); Administration Building #2 (later used as home offices for various city departments); Engineering Building No.#1; Engineering Building No.#2 Also included are many contributing resources including: two fire hydrants ; two blacksmiths ; three water pumps ; five tires ; six inches by six inches unpainted pine plank flooring .
