Georgetown is a small town in southwestern Kentucky, located about 20 miles (32 km) east of the city of Lexington. The population was 5,877 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site where Georgetown now stands was first inhabited by Native Americans in what is now southeastern Kentucky. A trading post and mill were built there in 1814 by Colonel John Brown and his brigade of Kentucky Volunteers during the War for Independence. The town began to grow rapidly after General James K. Polk's decision to build the Louisville & Nashville Railroad through central Kentucky in 1852 led to increased traffic and development along that route. In 1860, Georgetown became an incorporated municipality with a population of 754 people. In September 1861, Confederate forces burned down several buildings including the frame courthouse and jail in downtown Georgetown while on their way to meet General Robert E. Lee at Harrodsburg. This event helped begin the end of Georgetown's role as a Confederate stronghold in central Kentucky. Georgetown was founded in 1786 by John Kennedy, who named it for the ancient Roman city of Georgetown on the Potomac River. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center of learning and business. In 1814, Georgetown became the capital of Kentucky and was renamed Washingtonville after President James K. Polk’s brother-in-law, General James Wilkinson. In 1921, Georgetown absorbed neighboring Knoxville and moved its government to Louisville. Today, Georgetown is a small town with a rich history that can be found throughout its streets, buildings, and iconic businesses such as The Bluegrass Café. The early years of Georgetown were difficult due to its location on the frontier between Virginia and Kentucky. But by 1800, the town had become an important trading post and hub for education and commerce. By 1814, however, problems started arising due to the growing population of Georgetown and lack of land available for development. This led to tensions between VirginiaVaesseniansandKentuckiansover land rights and taxation issues. Eventually Congress passed legislation in 1826 authorizing the erection of a courthouse in Lexington but this project never proceeded because no one wanted to move from their home in nearby Virginia City (now Arlington). In order to solve these problems, John Kennedy decided to establish his own town in what is now known as Georgetown on the Potomac River. He named it after his ancestral home near Rome which he had visited while still in college at Catholic University (later Columbia). After two years of construction work starting in May 1786*, Johns Hopkins University opened up shop inside what is today called The Bluegrass Café*. The first class graduated from Johns Hopkins School Of Medicine there just weeks later*! For many years thereafter*, students came from all over Marylandto attend classes at Georgetown*! Because there wasn’t anything else like it back then*, people quickly formed social clubs* which helped promote friendly competition among themselves.* These organizations continue to play an important role today at Georgetown*! As research has shown*, development within metropolitan areas often leads to decline *especially when it comes time for municipal administrations††*. This was especially true during the 19th century when growth rates outside metropolitan areas began outpacing those within them *. As a result*, governments throughout America struggled with how best to keep pace with rapid population growth *and maintain control over limited resources*. Ultimately, this led to increased centralizationism‡§ within many American states (* see History: Centralizationism) *. At times this led To great expense (* see: American Revolution). However, overall it fostered economic progress *and made possible massachusetts Bay Colony settlement down south††*. When Kentucky joined United States in 1861″ following secession from Confederate States™*) things changed dramatically *. With Lexington already having become part of newly created Tennessee Valley Authority®), most residents here decided they would rather stay put than leave their homes behind¶¶(* See: Tennessee Valley Authority). So instead of facing another exodus like previosly happened where people simply left for Kansas or Texas***) [* See: Missouri Compromise], Kentucky was given full authority over its own government including both internal affairs (such as education) AND foreign policy (such as relations with other countries*!). Because much more could be done here than either Virginia or Tennessee could offer(*see below), Kentucky quickly emerged as one of America’s leading agricultural states***) [*See: Agriculture]. Georgetown was founded in 1785 by the Kentucky Company, a group of investors looking to establish a new capital for Kentucky. The company planned to create a city on the site of present-day Georgetown and name it after General James Wilkinson, who had helped lead the Revolutionary War. However, Wilkinson never moved from his home in Lexington, and the city never got its name. In 1801, Congress created Georgetown as an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of Louisville. In 1825, Georgetown became part of the newly formed United States when Kentucky seceded from Confederation.
