In 1792, Kentucky became a part of the United States of America. In 1794, the first permanent English-speaking settler arrived in what is now Kentucky. He named his new land “Independence” after himself and his countrymen felt they deserved their own government and Flag. The area that would become Kentucky was sparsely populated until the early 1800s when large tracts were opened up for settlement by British fur traders looking for new markets for their goods. By 1802, there were over 1,000 people living in what is now Kentucky. The population boom continued through the 1830s and 1840s as American farmers discovered rich coal seams and timber resources in the region. In 1846, following a referendum vote to secede from the United States,Kentucky voted to become an independent state under the leadership of John Custer and Daniel Boone. The secession movement had many causes: concern about growing economic inequality between northern and southern states; resentment over federal policies favoring slavery; lack of support from within Congress; and fear that greater western expansion could threaten eastern dominance on natural resources such as timberland and mineral deposits. Many people feel that Independence helped spawn some of America’s most iconic landmarks – such as Mount Rushmore National Monument – because it allowed those responsible for creating them some degree of self-promotion (e.g., national monument developers). Despite its initial successes, Independence experienced several setbacks during its early years including a hard winter in 1849–50 which caused extensive damage to infrastructure; clashes with white Anglos over land ownership, education, religion, politics and trade; conflict with Native Americans over fishing rights; civil unrest over anti-immigrant sentiment among frontier whites; a series of devastating droughts in 1850–51 which hurt agricultural production; political instability caused by competing interests within society – bothNorthern slaveholders andFree Labor advocates wanted more access to natural resources while Southernoutherners objected to anythingoutside their control (what we term today “the opening up period”);and finally major military defeats at New Market fought against forces led by General Ulysses S Grant in 1871–72 which ended Any hopeof independence becoming reality within ten years
