In 1861, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's march through centralKentucky opened up new areas for fighting during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Lieutenant Colonel George Hines to take control of Murrayville and other nearby settlements from Confederate forces under Major General Jubal Early. Aftermath: A Ghost Town Aftermath: A Ghost Town In 1865, Union troops burned down most of downtown Murrayville but only destroyed some buildings and left behind evidence such as bricks and mortar still standing today including a courthouse and jail (now used as apartments). This event remains oneof history's most notorious burns ever committed in America and has been mentionedin popular culture throughout its duration including references to it in Forrest Gump (), The Simpsons (), South Park () and more recently "The Good Place". In 2003-2004 local residents started restoring much of downtownMurrayville back to its pre-fire state however some portions remain uncontrolledand are still occasionally vandalized or looted
