Shelbyville is a town in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,917 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County and part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The name "Shelbyville" comes from the Shawnee word "sha-lay-lee" meaning "happy valley." The town started as a small settlement on an Indian trading post near present day Shelbyville, Kentucky. On July 6, 1800, General David Wilkinson founded what would become known as Clarksville on land he had purchased from the Shawnee tribe. He named it after his father-in-law and friend James Wilkinson. In 1812, General Robert Ewing's wing of cavalry unit commanded by Colonel John Covington fought a battle against Native Americans at Winchester River Bridge over which flows the Ohio River. This event became known as "the Battle of Winchester". After this victory over Native Americans in 1812, Colonel John Covington decided to move his family from Winchester to Clarksville so they could start anew. In 1819, Judge Thomas Minton organized a township within what was then Henderson Township and named it for himself – Mintonburgh Township (now called Newport News). Henderson Township was formed out of parts of Knox and Stony Counties in 1861 whenKY changed its borders due to the American Civil War raged on nearby between Unionists and Confederate troops. The first courthouse in Shelbyville was built in 1865 by pioneer Justice Samuel Gibbs under contract with District Attorney George Witherspoon Sr.. In 1886 Drury Publishing Company moved its operations from Cincinnati to Shelbyville and began publishing newspapers there including The Courier (1886–1900), The Daily Herald (1900–1901), and The Republican (1901–1920). With these new developments came many businesses such as grocery stores; banks; hotels; lumberyards; sawmills; coal mines; Ford Motor Co.'s Model T plant; Masonic Lodge No 1A (1889); First Baptist Church (1892); leather works by JB Brown & Sons Ltd.; Rural Telephone Service Incorporated(later AT&T) A post office called Clarksville was established in 1865 but failed becauseof lack of interest In 1907 KY raised $150 000 campaign for dam construction that would result in creation of Cumberland River Lake which would provide irrigation water for much needed crops like cotton In 1912 voters passed an ordinance establishing one school district with seven schools split among eight precincts On November 12th 1916 Shelbyvillians elected their first black mayor Dolphus Greenleaf who served until 1928
