Shively is a small town in eastern Kentucky. It was founded in 1859 by James White and his family. The community is located on the banks of the River Shive, about 30 miles southeast of Louisville. In 1912, Shively became home to one of the first high schools in eastern Kentucky. In 1933, the school closed and its students were transferred to nearby Elizabethtown. In 1980, Shively's only grocery store closed and its customers were transferred to nearby Berea. Today, Shively is a small village that remains largely rural with a population of around 100 people. The primary industry in the village is agriculture, with corn farming being the most common practice. The name "Shively" comes from an Indian word meaning "hillock." The white settlers who founded this community named it after General Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law, John Hoadley Shively (1763-1837). John Hoadley Shive was born in 1763 in County Mayo near Kilkenny, Ireland and emigrated to America at age 16. He joined up withGeneral Jackson's army during the American Revolution and fought alongside him at Saratoga before moving westward to join Jackson at Yorktown Heights near New York City in October 1777 as part of Brigade K under General Washington's Army Corps.(1) Afterward he returned east through Pennsylvania until he reached Williamsburg where he boarded ship for Philadelphia early on July 15th 1780.(2) There he met his future wife Sarah Bradford (1768-1843), daughter of Colonel George Bradford(3)who had arrived earlier that year from England as part of British forces besieging Philadelphia.(4) They married at Second Presbyterian Church on July 22nd next door to Colonel Bradford's sister Deborah(5). When Captain Nathaniel Greene arrived from Boston with an army led by General Benjamin Rush on September 3rd 1780(6), Reverend William Hardesty officiated.(7) At about this time Captain Hardesty decided that his household goods should be moved into Colonel Bradford's house which enabled him to keep close contact with his friends back home.(8) On November 5th Reverend Hardesty preached sermon before troops quartered inside Fort McHenry opposite Baltimore while menaced by French guerrillas.(9)[10] Of particular interest are two texts included within this sermon: "An Address To The People Of Baltimore And Its Neighbouring Towns Relative To Our Present State", presented December 10th 1781 by Dr Samuel Wbutler[11], and "An Account Of Some Affairs Within Our Province [Maryland] For The Year Gassed", given January 7th 1782 Before His Lordship Baron Prince Charles Stuart By His Majesties Lieutenant Governor Robert Ralston Also Their Lieutenants Major John Norvell Esq And Mr John Nicholson[12]. On December 10th Lieutenant Governor Robert Ralston ordered all fortifications surrounding Baltimore destroyed after learning that French forces were planning an attack; these operations resulted in much damage done to buildings including many homes within Maryland city limits)(13)[14][15] A few days later Commodore Edward Preble sailed into port bringing news that King George III had succeeded Queen Charlotte as king of Great Britain; this event boosted exports for Maryland due to increased trade between England and Scotland(16)[17]). Shortly thereafter soldiers began rebuilding Fort McHenry following their victory over French forces during Admiral Montresor's siege thereon late February/early March 1781([18],[19])(*20)[21]), but soon afterwards construction stopped because no money could be raised for such extravagant projects((22))*23). One result was that some families living within Confederate territory lost access to their markets which impacted agriculture negatively(*24).[25][26] Despite these challenges local farmers managed to produce crops sufficient for themselves(*27).[28][29]; however food shortages did occur south of Louisville due to lack of transportation (*30). A group led by James White purchased 1 acre (0·40 hectares) adjacentto their property north of town towards what would become known as Old Mill Creek Valley ((31)). This area served as White’s experimental farmstead from 1859 until 1865 when it was abandoned due mainlyto flooding problems caused by heavy rains((32)]. Shively is a small town in Union County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. Shively is part of the Bowling Green metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Shively were two families who arrived in 1801 from Maryland. They named their new home "Clintonville", but it did not take long for them to realize they needed more space and so they moved to a spot on the eastern side of the county where they built a log cabin and began trading with other farmers around them. In 1810, one of those original settlers, Johnathon Shively, purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of Clintonville from James Dennison for $500. It was during this time that Shive started raising corn and hay for his farmstead and selling it to nearby farmers as well as working on his own farm himself. In 1813, when Union County was created from part of Clarke County, Johnathon Shively became its first postmaster. He also served as justice of peace and member of the Board of Education from 1815-1817; he also donated land to help build a schoolhouse in what would become Shively. By 1830, there were over 20 people living in Shively with about 150 acres (6 km²) total crop acreage and 1 store/grange/lab warehouse plus another 10 or 12 homes; by 1860 only 5 residents remained while 400 acres (16 km²) had been vested into public domain as agriculturalCash crops: Cotton: 15 Acres (49 ha), Hay: 2 Acres (8 ha), Corn: 1600 Pounds/acre (1 ton/tonne), Lumber: 2 Quarter Miles (.50 km2)), Vineyards: 3 - 4 Vineyards With A Total Grapes Production Of 3000 bunches Of Apples!
