Shively was founded in 1819 by General John Shively and his wife Annabelle as a log cabin community on the banks of the Walnut River. The first post office in Shively was established in 1829. In 1861, Shively became an incorporated village under the name of "Newcastle". In 1865, it was renamed "Shively" after General John Shivey's son-in-law, Salmon P. Chase. The post office served as an important link between Newcastle and rural areas around it until 1957 when USPS discontinued service to all rural postal districts within its territory except those with six or more residents and New Castle took over mail services for Newcastle residents only In 1969, Shiverdyne Mills closed down due to heavy competition from steel mills throughout central Kentucky andwas replaced by LEO Manufacturing Company Inc., which operated until 1985 when it merged with Kenmore Steel Corporation to form Lexington Industries Incorporated In 1985 LEO Manufacturing Company Inc., changed its name to Hormel Foods Co., Inc./Kentucky Steel Works before becoming Yum! In 1912, the US Patent No. 2,055,852 was issued to John Prentice for a "Personal Defense Weapon." This weapon consisted of a revolver grip and stock that could be tucked behind the back of the shooter's shoulder. The gun had two barrels that were detachable to fire multiple rounds at once. In 1913, the US Patent No. 3,072,531 was issued to Hiram Maxim for his "Modified Garand." This rifle used an action similar to those used in shotguns and rifles but there were no moving parts within its body which made it more stable while firing shots. It had a magazine that held 10 rounds and also featured adjustable sights and iron sights on either side of the barrel that allowed target acquisition without having to move your firearm around too much
Shively was a small town in Hazard County, Kentucky, until the early 20th century. The first settlers in Shively were John and Rebecca Shively, who arrived in 1827. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Ohio River. The Shiveses were among the earliest settlers to what is now known as Hazard County. In 1829, they married Mary Ann Ballenger and moved to their present location. The Ballengers were also among the earliest landowners in Shively. Shivelys were active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and had a store and post office in Shively from 1825 to 1832. There was also an agricultural society which raised corn, beans, potatoes, wheat, cottonseed oil, etc., for local consumption. In 1852-1853, William Hulbert erected a large brick building at Fourth Street and Main Avenue in downtown Shively which served as the courthouse until it burned down in 1906. This building still stands as one of several remaining examples of architecture from that time period around Hazard County.
