Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Somerset was founded on November 3, 1814 by James Denny and his family. The first settler in what is now Somerset was John Thomson. In 1821, George Bird published a book about the history of Hardin County and its people entitled "The History of Hardin and Shelby Counties". This book has been reprinted many times and can be found at most libraries. In 1864, General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched his Confederate forces through Hardin County to join up with General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. General Forrest's forces looted shops and homes in Somerset while he was assaulting a Union military camp near Lismore on October 25, 1864. When news of this event reached headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, General Forrest was court-martialed and executed on December 12th 1865 for this crime against humanity.
