St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Firearms and ammunition were an integral part of this community for over two hundred years and St. Matthews is home to one of the oldest gun stores in America, J.B. Stevens Armory, which opened its doors on December 5th 1836. The first firearm store in America was founded by John Bostock Stevens in St. Matthews, KY on December 5th 1836 as JBS Arms & Ammunition Shop (later known as JBS Guns). The store served as a stop on the journey westward for settlers who were looking to purchase firearms and ammunition needed for their new venture into what was then wilderness country. In 1860, JBS Guns moved from its original location to what is now called Third Street between Main and Elm Streets in downtown St. Matthews after purchasing land adjacent to present-day Third Street Library and Park Building. In 1861, John Bostock Stevens passed away and his son John F Stevens took charge of the business at JBS Guns with assistance from his brother-in-law Sam Rayburne Jr.. John F Stevens continued running the business until it merged with GAP Gunsmithy Company (now Smith & Wesson) in 1922 when both businesses were combined into one company under the name GAP/Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation . JFS arms corporation became well known for manufacturing high quality revolvers including Colt's Model 1851 Navy Rifle under license from Colt Industries Incorporated throughout much of World War II .. During prohibition era many KY residents turned to buying illicit firearms from Crosley Manufacturing Company just outside Louisville due to lack of legal regulation governing pistol ownership .. However by 1946 Crosley had closed down operations withinKY making it difficult for individuals without licensed pistols or rifles to purchase these devices .. After repeal Of Prohibition all handgun sales within KY reverted back To State Regulation

The first European to set foot in what is now St. Matthews was Englishman James Caldwell in 1775. He named it Caldwell's Mills after his estate in Sussex County, England (now part of Manchester, England). In 1801, John Sikes arrived from Virginia and founded Sikes' Store on Main Street. He also bought land near the present-day courthouse and built a house there which still stands today as a museum called the Sikes House Museum. A post office was established at St Matthews in 1805, and remained open until it closed in 1930s due to mail fraud by local officials. In 1819, Indian trader Nicholas Casey settled around 100 acres east of the present town line on the Harlan River where he built a log cabin known as Casey's Ferry Landing (). Casey sold this land to General David Harlan for $1 per acre ($46 per square mile). Harlan developed it into what is now downtown St Matthews with stores, homes, churches and other buildings including Harlan's Castle which became home of St Matthews Courthouse during its early years. The first school opened in 1825 under teacher John Neely Bryan with 20 students; later schools were added including one for African American children beginning in 1840 which was later renamed "Plymouth Academy" after Plympton School District 90 superintendent Drayton Vespuelo Plymouth who donated most of that money to build that school The first post office at St Matthews opened on October 15th 1830 () serving residents inside and outside of town limits with one mailbox each side of Baldwin Road (). Today US Route 421 serves as a main artery through town center providing access to Interstate 75 W within minutes while also providing vital transportation links between Louisville/Jeffersonville/New Albany areas to the south and larger cities north A fire destroyed much of downtown St Matthews on December 3rd 1898 (). rebuilt over 6 months using some old lumber brought down from burned building materials That same year saw enactment by Congress Of A bill titled An act To Provide For The Education And Welfare Of The Negroes In The United States (42 Stat 915) This important law led to increased opportunities for black Americans throughout America through public education starting with free primary school for whites; standardization across all states followed soon thereafter

The town was founded by Scots-Irish Presbyterians in 1814 as a farming community on the eastern seashore of what is now Pike County. It became an important stop on the Underground Railroad and later served as a center for cotton plantations in the area. In the early 20th century, St. Matthews became known for its annual Christmas parade and its production of children's plays called "The Mikado." In 1923, Presbyterian minister John Rankin named his church after Saint Matthews of Hungary (c. 100–ad 648). The first pastor of St. Matthews Church was Reverend James Auldridge; he served from 1911 to 1916. From 1926 to 1951 Revd John Rankin led the congregation which grew to over 1,000 members across nine churches and two schools before his retirement in 1951 In 1973, St. Matthews was designated as a National Historic Landmark by President Richard Nixon with assistance from Congresswoman Barbara Jordan In 1978-79, another pastorship change took place when Reverend Wanda Laughlin assumed leadership until her appointment as pastor emeritus in 1984; she retired six years later Political scientist Daniel Patrick Moynihan has written about how religion has played an important role in American politics since its inception: "Atheism orgodlessness? That mattered less than whether people could believe there were gods whose power determined things." Moynihan observes that religious belief often shapes social behavior both domestically and abroad: "The organized religion that shaped America’s political ethos may have been more powerful than any atheist movement it produced."

The first white settler in the area was David Hathaway, who arrived in 1785. He built a cabin on what is now the corner of Third and Main Streets. A few years later, Nathaniel Banks purchased the land and started to build a house. By 1814, he had completed his home and named it Bank Street. The town was founded on April 12, 1814 by James Knoppers and John Wilkinson as a place for farmers to gather together to trade goods. It wasn't until 1820 that banks began issuing currency, which helped make St. Matthews a commercial center. In 1825, St. Matthews became the capital of Kentucky after its statehood.
