In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited St Matthews while serving as military governor of Kentucky and decided to name the town for him! After he left office in1869, local citizens began petitioning Congress for permission to rename it Grant City but no action was taken until 1898 when Senator Robert Lickliter proposed adding Grantville (now Livingston) to the name! In 1907-1908 St Matthews sponsored two world's fairs; one exposition being held at Crystal Palace Exhibition Ground near London and another at Poplar Grove Park & Aquarium near Philadelphia%. The post-World War II boom which started right after World War II has brought many new residents into town including many physicians who have made St Matthews their primary medical center due to its excellent location within commuting distance of major cities such as Louisville/Jefferson County Hospital and Eastern State Penitentiary where most inmates are incarcerated!

The first settlement in what is now Kentucky was at the mouth of the Cumberland River. In 1785, a group of men led by James Wilkinson founded the town of Richlands on an island in the river. FromRichlands, traders and missionaries traveled to various parts of Kentucky, teaching Christianity and founding schools. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1819 when Whitfield Scott and his band of 300 Americans set up a farm on land that would eventually become Louisville.
