In 1892, Winchester began manufacturing shotguns. They are still making them today. In 1907, Winchester moved their manufacturing plant from its original location to what is now known as the Bluegrass Arsenal. This site produced artillery weapons like cannons and mortars used by the Union army during the American Civil War
Winchester is a small town in southeastern Kentucky, United States. The population was 4,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette–Breadline Micropolitan Statistical Area. Winchester is home to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and its Museum of Firearms. The first settlers in what is now Winchester were farmers who came from northeast England around 1785. They named their new settlement after Sir William Winchester, an English general and statesman who had helped lead British forces against Spanish forces at Saratoga in 1813. By 1800, the town had about 100 residents. In 1801, John Potter built the first school in what is now Winchester. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson made Winchester his headquarters during his army's campaign against Native American nations near present-day Louisville, Kentucky. He stayed there for several days before moving on to battle other Indian leaders at Fallen Timbers outside of present-day Springfield, Illinois. After this victory over Native Americans, Jackson returned to Winchester and ordered Potter to build him a rifle tower as a symbol of American strength and defiance of European influence on America's future growth. The tower still stands today as part of the downtown core of Winchester In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell issued orders urging troops in eastern Kentucky not to fight under Union General Ulysses S Grant because he believed that slavery would be restored once the war ended (Ewell thought that Lincoln should remain president), most people in Old Hickory County sided with the Confederacy instead; however, some family members decided to stay loyal and founded a grocery store called "Old Hickory Stores" on Main Street in 1865 despite being forbidden by their friends back home to do so. The stores continued operations until 2000 when they closed their doors due to economic conditions statewide; however they have been preserved as a historical landmark located inside Oneonta State University since then

The college became one of the largest and most respected schools in America, and it still operates today as a co-educational university with over 1,000 students from all walks of life. The city of Winchester grew rapidly after the opening of the railroad to nearby Louisville in 1839; by 1870 it had reached its current size thanks to economic development around both its educational and industrial properties. By 1925 it had become one of America's leading manufacturing cities with a smelting operations that produced more than 60 percent of world lead production. Today much of the heavy industry left behind during the Great Depression has been replaced by new businesses including health care and technology companies; however, many aspects of traditional manufacturing remain strong including textiles, apparel and auto parts production.

Winchester experienced a resurgence after World War II as an agricultural center and then as an entertainment destination.
