Gretna, Louisiana was the first town in Louisiana to have a gun mag. The ammunition store that began selling guns in Gretna in 1881 became the first licensedgun dealer in the area and is still in business today. In 1902, the first sheriff of Gretna was elected with the help of a group of gun mags members. The organization has kept up its presence ever since. In 2007, Gretna's volunteer fire department adopted a .45-caliber handgun as their new standard issue weapon. This event was also marked by the establishment of the Gun Mag Hall of Fame within Gretna city hall. It is now home to more than 100 firearms enthusiasts who come to enjoy displays on various topics related to GUNS history and culture.

In 1951, Gretna became one of five towns in Jefferson Parish to become independent from Orleans Parish. The first post office opened in Gretna on November 10, 1853. The current post office building was built in 1904 and is a two-story brick structure with a hipped roof and limestone trimming around its facade. According to the 2010 United States Census, there were 6,359 people residing in Gretna parish including 4,521 households and 2,859 families; the population density was 1,584.4 inhabitants per square mile (590). There were 3,624 housing units at an average density of 589.7 per square mile (269.9/km²). The racial makeup of Gretna parish was 82% White (of any race), 11% African American, 0% Native American or Alaskan Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander

Gretna, Louisiana is a census-designated place located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,771. The name "Gretna" was derived from the Choctaw word meaning "beautiful." The town was founded in 1853 by Scots-Irish settlers and named after General Robert E. Lee's home state of Virginia. The original town was on an island near the present day intersection of State Routes 12 and 3 which allowed for easy navigation during boat races that took place between Gretna and New Orleans each year. In 1858, a branch line from New Orleans to Iberia opened through Gretna with trainloads of passengers every day. In 1870, when Brigadier General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in east Louisiana as part of his Union army's pursuit of Confederate general Jubal Early, he stayed at legislatureman John Broughton’s home for three days before moving on to find Early at Alexandria. A group of reconstructionists who had come to help rebuild Old Baton Rouge decided to move to what would become Gretna after learning about available land and streams near the present site. On July 14th 1861, Gadsden's Volunteer Infantry regiment (now known as the 119st Airborne Brigade) disembarked at Fort Morgan Plantation in Gretna under command of Colonel George Armstrong Custer following their victory over Confederate forces at Bull Run Bridge on July 11th 1861. After Union troops destroyed all infrastructure within Jackson Parish due to flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina two years later, gentrification began taking hold in Gretna with people coming from Jackson Parish looking for easier access to jobs and better schools than what they found here in parish governmentally sanctioned towns like West Monroe or Slidell while still being able to enjoy some aspects associated with their former homes such as farmer markets on Tuesdays morning nearby or access to deep water fishing rivers both upstream (such as the Sabine River) and downstream from town limits including Assumption Lake which provides excellent spawning habitat for largemouth bassiculture operations along its banks; trout fisheries; and several golf courses dotting East Baton Rouge Parish countryside surrounding it making it one if not the most vibrant tourism destinations within this area adjacent onlyto major metropolitan areas such as Dallas/Fort Worth/Houston etc.; however local grocery stores continue open 24/7 serving residents' needs despite lackadaisical emergency response times typical throughout much greater Uptown New Orleans bearing less resemblance thereto insofar as food availability is concerned having little impact whatsoever upon prices charged therein since groceries are generally stocked centrally without sale items held back thereby resulting primarily into higher prices reflecting surpluses generated therein rather than retail pricing evils indexing inexorably thereafter growth rates now largely attributable therein notwithstanding development pressures increasingly putting upward pressure upon wages even among traditionally high school educated workers across Greater Lafayette Area
Gretna was founded in 1806 by General David Dixon. It grew rapidly as a cotton town, and in 1827 the first courthouse was built. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down the town to prevent its capture by Union forces. The U.S. military rebuilt Gretna after the war, and it continued to grow until it had a population of over 100,000 in 1930.
