In 1870, another local resident named Augustus Newcomb donated land to make way for a new courthouse and jail; these structures still stand today on nearby Main Street in downtown Hammond. This courthouse served as court house until 1935 when it was replaced by the present structure which sports an eagle sculpture by local sculptor Don DeVault On November 25, 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces at Big Muddy Creek Bridge over Big Muddy River northeast ofpresent-day Alexandria Parish; this episode is also celebrated annually by residents of Alexandria Parish with their annual "Forrest Festival" celebration . On December 12th 1865 Union General Richard Halleck ordered all Union forces within five miles (8 km) east thereof to retire without any loss or gain . This order prompted Forrest's force to attack again at Big Muddy Creek Bridge on December 15th 1865 . From here until 1865 there were no major engagements between Union and Confederate forces within five miles (8 km) of Alexandria Parish . However, from November 25th through December 12th 1865 Forrest's force engaged three times near present-day Hammond/Prairieville/Albanyville
