Opelousas, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 27,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson Parish. The city of Opelousas was founded in 1867 by General John Pemberton and his wife Rachel Waddell Pemberton. The City of Opelousas and the parish it surrounds were created from part of St. Landry Parish on November 3, 1916. On July 1, 1917, the eastern half of Jefferson Parish became part of Opelousas while the western half remained as St. Charles Parish until 1984 when that parish was divided into two parts: Orleans County west of I-10 became part of Opelousas while Bienville County east of I-10 became part of Jefferson Parish again. The history and culture associated with Opelousas are intertwined with those experienced in other Crescent City communities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In 1867 General John Pemberton established what would become known as "Pemberton's Landing" onshore at Bagby Point just south of downtown (now outside the boundaries ofOpelousas). This landing served as a staging ground for supplies coming downriver to the growing port city on the Mississippi River. From here cottonseed oil and other agricultural products were transported upriver to New Orleans before being shipped downriver to market through Pass Christian on Lake Pontchartrain

The name "Opello" means "headland." A post office called Opelousas has been in operation since 1815. The current municipal building was built in 1898. In 1862, General Robert E Lee's Confederate forces attacked Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant at Drewry's Bluff near Opelousas during the Battle of Gettysburg; Opelousas quickly surrendered without resistance. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Baton Rouge with 1,500 men looking for additional support while withdrawing from Vicksburg; Early reached Opelousas before reaching Baton Rouge and burned much of town before retreating into Mississippi late that night. The severe damage done toOpelousas' infrastructure by Early's attack remains one of its most significant scars as a result of war.Galloway
