Slidell, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City metropolitan area. Slidell was founded in 1821 as a post office on the mouth of the Iberia River by Captain John Paulding and his men after their journey from Mobile, Alabama to take possession of land naturalized by Spain. In 1824 it became known as Slippery Rock after a rapid stream that flowed through the town. The original town site had been located on what is now Slidell Boulevard just east of Covington Road and west of I-10 exit #3A (now US 71). The first European settler in what is now Slidell was Jean Lafitte who arrived in 1802 and built a ferry crossing over the Iberia River near present-day Slidell Boulevard and Grand Avenue. Lafitte's landing put an end to French piracy off the Mississippi coast which had been plaguing Spanish traders since early times. After independence from France, James Kenedy purchased 640 acres (2 km²) alongslidell boulvard from Lafitte for $2 per acre (0.50 ha). This purchase formed Kenedy County which later included all ofJefferson Parish north of Baton Rouge Street including Slidell He then began construction on what would become one of America's most impressive mansions during the antebellum period - "Kendall House" - now slidell middle school . Slidell is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Slidell was James Hogue in 1816. In 1830, John Kenedy and his brother-in-law Prentiss bought the land from Francis Marion for $4 per acre. The town began to form after a road was built through the area in 1837 by General David Dixon and Colonel James Wilkinson to connect Baton Rouge with Spanishtown on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1840, Slidell became known as "the pearl of Louisiana" because it had become an important trading depot for fisheries along the Gulf Coast. The commercial fishing industry declined during World War II but has redeveloped since then; now Slidell is home to several large seafood companies including Wabash Seafoods and Planter's Pride Farms. Slidell also contains two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) - Slider College & Southern Illinois University Carbondale – both of which are located within close proximity to one another on Veterans Boulevard adjacent to Veterans Stadium.
