Slidell is a town located in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 33,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Slidell was founded in 1819 by General Robert Ewell and his family as a small farming community on land that had been donated to them by Governor Claiborne Pell. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction and increased its population to about 100 in 1890. By 1930, Slidell had reached its peak with a population of nearly 1,800. However, rapid growth led to suburban development and decline in residential values throughout the late 20th century; today, Slidell has a total population of just over 17,000. The town is named for Lieutenant Colonel James Dickey Slidell (1798-1868), who fought under General Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War and later served as Secretary of War under Polk. Afterward he retired to Slidell where he died several years later at age 90 years old. Slidell was incorporated as a borough on March 5, 1892 following approval by the Louisiana legislature. The borough was renamed Slakeyville after Rear Admiral Edwin Swayne Slakey (1859-1920), commander of Ulysses S. Grant's forces at Vicksburg during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. When it became apparent that annexations were not going to take place from neighboring towns such as Thibodaux or New Iberia due to opposition from Mayor Prentice Hennigan, Slakeyville unilaterally seceded from Lafayette Parish on December 10, 1896 and became an independent city within Orleans Parish with its own mayor and government headed by one vote only from residents who lived in Slakeyville proper rather than any other section of town which may have wanted it because they thought their property would be annexed intoslidell if it did not agree to become part ofslidell itself On November 9, 1898 slidelly voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation into New Orleans City limits should this annexation proceed through formal channels other than local legislation On July 15 1957 slidelly voters ratified an amendment making it an open secret that they desired annexation back into Lafayette Parish This caused anger among many residents who felt betrayed by their mayors refusal while others saw annexation as something that must be done for political reasons since much property withinslidell which had once been off limits now lay withinlafayette parish boundaries

Slidell is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The first settlement in Slidell was founded by French colonists and named Houma. A post office called Houma was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1836. The town of Slidell was incorporated on April 6, 1855, from parts of St. Bernard Parish and Plaquemines Parish. The name comes from a plantation called "Slidell" near Baton Rouge where one Captain John Slidell had his house built in 1799-1800 for himself and his family. Captain John's nephew James Fenton also purchased the land east of present day Slidell from the original owners including General Nicholas Bureaux deFleury (1774-1845), Governor of Louisiana under Napoleon Bonaparte and brother to early American politician Pierre Boucard de Fleury (1768-1830). Captain John's grandson Henry Jourdan bought the land north ofpresent day Slidell from Colonel Thomas Fenton on June 7, 1829 for $6000 cash which he paid with slaves brought overland into Louisiana by Father André Girod (1795-1860) during the July Revolution that year as part of a slave revolt against Spanish rule across much of North America known as the Haitian Revolution which began December 30th, 1791 near Santo Domingo - see: Haitian Revolution timeline . Lieutenant Edward Pemberton took command of forces loyal to King Charles IV who were besieging Plaquemines Parish courthouse December 12th - January 2nd 1800 after news arrived back home about successful slave revolts taking place throughout what is now Haiti leading to increased British interest within weeks including an offer for $8000 per African taken captive even though Massachusetts Bay Colony had already offered this amount to France! This action by Pemberton helped convince Royal Governor Talbot not to sell any more slaves following reports coming back home indicating large numbers being sold into slavery throughout what is now Haiti! It should be noted that many individuals who fought against Spain & France during the Haitian Revolution are buried within or adjacent to present day Slidell including: Jean Baptiste Colbert (1664-1745), Paul Revere (1635-1793), Daniel Defoe(1737-1812), Marquis de Lafayette (1781-1847) among others!
