Slidell is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by Frenchmen who arrived on what is now Slidell Island in Lake Pontchartrain. The name comes from "slide" (a type of bag) and "delà" (from Spanish for "over"). The first gun slings were made out of Telescopic cotton twine or hempen thread and used to sling bullets over one's shoulder into a target range. These early gunslings were not very accurate, but they served their purpose well enough. In 1851, Slidell became the city of Slidell and began to develop as a munitions production center due to its location at the mouth of the Mississippi River. By 1860, Slidell had become a manufacturing center for rifles and pistols as well as cannons and artillery shells. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Slidell was siege-proofed by Confederate forces with three armories: one located onslope near present-day Frenchman Street; another on Bayou Teche; and another located on an island in Lake Pontchartrain just south of downtown Slidell proper. As Confederate forces advanced upriver towards Baton Rouge, they constructed two more armories: one on Maple Avenue east of downtown; and another on Third Street west of downtown. During this time period many people living in Slidingell came under Federal occupation because Southern sympathizers fled northward when war broke out. On April 25th 1861 Federal troops led by General Nathaniel Banks attacked Confederate positions at Grand Gulf where about 3200 men were concentrated including 2000 cavalrymen commanded by Brigadier General James Longstreet II USMC…. After four days’ fighting Union casualties numbered about 1800 killed or wounded compared to 9000 Confederates who lost none reported until after Mobile Districtoccupied Port Hudson…..As Union losses mounted it became apparent that capture or destruction must be allowed for before withdrawal could be effected…..After further consideration it was decided that allentlements should be offered each side in order to allow withdrawal without bloodshed however no such offer was made……...It should also be noted that while Federal troops withdrew through Grand Gulf they destroyed all three armsories here which demonstrates their intent notto leave any evidence behind.....This event marked perhaps the most significant victory for Union forces since Battle of Fort Donelson……………On July 10th 1861 Confederate Major General Robert E Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House following five months’ long battle….On January 7th 1865 President Andrew Johnson ordered Surgeon General Edwin Mudd aboard USS Nashville (1862) to open fire upon Rebel ships off Norfolk Virginia after seeing them firing upon civilians ashore…..The result resulted in 23 Americans killed/wounded/missing with over 100 vessels sunk..

Bledsoe Coleman (Lafayette’s son-in-law); James White Hall (Jurist general during Reconstruction); General Ambrose Burnside (); Judge William Taney (); and Judge David Cushing (). As part of western New Orleans area development following La Salle's expulsion from France in 1799, developers began purchasing land northward along Canal Street from what is now Slidell eastward to Interstate 10 on Lake Pontchartrain between I10/US 90 Busch Boulevard southwesterly then continuing easterly on I10/US 90 Busch Boulevard until reaching eastern Jefferson Parish Line near Thibodaux about 12 miles due west from Stennis AFB or about 3 1/2 hours flying time by air from New Orleans International Airport or 2 hours driving time by car from Gulfport Airport - these properties formed what is now called Canal Street Business District which included much more recent construction sites since when I-10 has been constructed adjacent thereto: chinatown on Magazine Road just east of Canal street which went up hill circa 1960 while movie theaters moved out nearer existing shopping malls - this redevelopment took place primarily along Magazine Road between canal street (& Magazine Rd.) providing convenient access arterial traffic with its severalWhy did businesses move away? &residents could go into any building proximate them usually Chinatown had an open frontage alley accommodating 50 stores with extensive parking lots all facing Magazine Road How can businesses stay if there are no people living near them? &picnic areas nearby were mostly unenclosed lot sizes measuring less than 100 sq ft.? Some residents abandoned their homes because they could not afford repairs done commonly outside contractors frequently came without permits so there was constant potential for damage Some residences still stand but are privatelyowned currently lack basic infrastructure needed like water main reclamation

It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Orleans-Metairie Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by French colonists in 1765 as a whaling settlement on Bayou Lafourche. By 1812, it had become an important cotton and sugar plantation center after production began in that area for both cash crops and naval surplus supplies. Slidell was also a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s. In 1868, Slidell became one of two towns to be annexed into New Orleans following its incorporation as a city under State law. At this time, Slidell's economy moved away from agriculture to include manufacturing and services within New Orleans' limits; however, since annexation much of Slidell's non-agricultural infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Katrina (2005). Slidell has experienced significant growth over recent years due to its location adjacent to Interstate 10 Exit 143/Lake Pontchartrain Boulevard (I-10), which provides easy access to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans Center for Medical Research & Technology (CMRT) hospitals and other medical complexes. The town’s strong economic development potential has led to several high-profile projects being undertaken by local businesses including: construction of a new hospital complex called First Baptist Saint John’s Health Care System; redevelopment of three blocks east along I-10 from Grand Gulf Drive into what is now called "The Landing" district; and completion of multiple shopping centers including "The Landing" district mall which opened in 2013 just north of downtown Slidell."
