The town was named after General James K. Slidell, who served as Confederate President from 1881 to 1885. The first Europeans to visit what is now Slidell were Frenchmen in 1795; they called it "Petite Inlet" because there was only one road leading into it from the mainland. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1800 by boat from New Orleans. They named their settlement "Iberia." Iberia soon became an important agricultural center due to its access to water and its location on a navigable body of water that allowed shipping traffic to boom during the early 1800s. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson's forces invaded New Orleans and captured Iberia for France. As part of the Treaty of Ghent, France ceded all its possessions west of Baton Rouge (including present-day Slidell) to America in return for military support against Napoleon Bonaparte during his Invasion of America campaign (1812-14). American traders began trading with Europe again after the treaty expired and soon discovered new sources of oil and natural gas in what is now Slidell County. Business boomed as farmers started producing cotton, sugar cane, rice and other crops near transportation infrastructure already in place including a canal system linking Lake Pontchartrain with Gulfport – making it easy for goods to flow into New Orleans even while Napoleon blockadeaded those ports! During Reconstruction following Reconstruction’s successful efforts to end post-Civil War racial violence across America using newly constituted state governments based on white supremacy rather than democracy so African Americans could have full participation in society – Louisiana had some unique challenges which must have been extremely frustrating for local officials trying to manage these rapidly changing waterside communities while also addressing critical public needs such as education, health care and infrastructure development – especially when political parties aligned themselves more along racial lines than they did around economic interests!
