Slidell is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,482 at the 2010 census. Slidell is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1814 by General Andrew Jackson and named for his brother-in-law, David Slidell. In 1836, Slocum's Ferry landed travelers at the site of Slidell to cross the river to New Orleans. The ferry service continued until 1870 when steamboats replaced it. In 1840, Jno. Loyall purchased land near what is now Slidell and built a log cabin as a trading post called "Lafayette". He named it after Lafayette Court House in Paris, France where he had been ambassador during the American Revolution. In 1864, Confederate general Braxton Bragg destroyed several buildings in downtown Slidell while ordering troops into town for what would become known as Operation Crossroads. The town quickly rebuilt and became an important center for cotton production until World War II when air raids made it dangerous to live there. Slidell was annexed by Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania in 1901; however slidellanians maintain their own government which has its own school board and fire department under private ownership
