Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Jefferson in Tangipahoa County, Louisiana. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Sulphur is home to the Sulphur School District and it is also the location of the Sulphur Airport. The area that now includes Sulphur was first settled by French colonists in the early 18th century. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded and sacked Mobile Bay for his perceived lack of justice when some white men were killed by Native Americans while fishing off of Gulf Islands. Jackson ordered all slaves brought overland to Alabama so they could be Freedmen Centers as part of his Reconstruction Plan. The town site was platted on December 4, 1825 by General James Wilkinson under a grant from Governor John Ladd. A post office called "Sulpher" was established at this point in 1828, but it was discontinued due to low mail volumes. The name "Sulpher" became popular because it referred to an area near where sulphurous gas bubbles up during combustion and can be seen from Earth's surface when looking out a window or from an airtight container. In 1840, Jno Fuhrman acquired title to what is now Sulpher Township from Wilkinson with permission from then-Governor Claiborne Pell. He named his new township after himself; however, this name did not become popular until later on when other towns nearby took on similar names (e.g., Greenville). In 1865, construction began on the railroad through central Louisiana which led to increased business opportunities for Sulpher residents who had access to cotton fields north of Baton Rouge and other markets downriver. By 1870, sulfur mining had become one of the town's main businesses and its citizens enjoyed easy access to foodstuffs grown around them such as tomatoes, onions, celery and bell peppers; salt pork; rice; beef; hogs; chickens; milk cows; horses; dogs (amidst many cane crops); various types of beeswax candles and cigars—some still being made today! In 1898–99 school term started but due Hurricane Floyd damage many homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair including much equipment used for farming which raised fears about future crop failures should another storm hit New Orleans like Katrina did eleven years earlier! After intense fundraising efforts spearheaded by Mrs George Washington Carver her $10 million gift made all necessary repairs possible within days repairing roofs gutters doors windows phone lines powerlines etc allowing classes back into schools on October 17th “a day that will live in history” as Headteacher Dr Lisa Gentry said “We are very grateful for your kind donation ladies & gents & our students just need books/staff/equipment back into classrooms tomorrow” The money went towards repairing physical damage done during Katrina including levee breaches reopened old roads filling potholes sandbags rails road shoulders bridges water shutoffs Essential services have been restored such as water pressure & heat – something that we take for granted each day! Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town in northwestern Louisiana. The population was 4,722 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tensas Parish. The first inhabitants of Sulphur were the Caddo people who lived along the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1814, Captain John Chouteau and his regiment discovered this area and named it "New Orleans." At that time, there was no actual Sulphur on either side of the river. The name came from an early French immigrant who had come to Louisiana in 1785 and established himself near what is now Chalmette. He called this new spot "Sulphur" because he found sulphurous ore hereabouts. When New Orleans became a United States city in 1821, Sulphur remained unincorporated because it was part of Rapides Parish until 1824 when it became one of Napoleon's three duchies within the Republic of Texas (the others being Galveston and Harrisburg). As part of its annexation by New Orleans in 1830, Sulphur became part of Jefferson parish as well. As Jefferson parish grew larger, so did its need for public square space which led to the construction or donation (1836-1847) by Judge Gouverneur Morris (1800-1865) and other citizens of Jeffersonville to create what are now downtown Sulphur two blocks wide on Broad Street between Second Street and Third Street with a Market Square in front; these squares were also known as Cotton Fields due to their high cotton production during those years Thereafter growth continued unabated with new buildings erected continually until after World War II when increased demands for office space combined with a decrease in population made necessary redevelopment which has included extensive additions to both Main Avenue northwardly from Seventh Street eastward since then This redevelopment has resulted not only in improved business conditions for many businesses but also excellent living quarters for many more people including most recently significant expansion into parking lots adjoining First Baptist Church located just east along Main Avenue opposite Seventh Street
Sulphur was founded in 1821 by Captain John D. Sulphur and his wife, Eliza. The town grew quickly, and by 1830 had a population of over 200 people. In 1851, Sulphur became the seat of government for the newly organized parish of Lafayette. The town's growth slowed during the early decades of the 20th century, but resumed after World War II as a result of increased manufacturing activity in Louisiana. The 21st century has seen some significant redevelopment in Sulphur, with new businesses and housing popping up throughout the community.
