Sulphur, Louisiana is a city located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is the seat of Shiawassee Parish and was established in 1827 as Sulphur Springs on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 24,057 at the 2010 census. The name Sulphur comes from "sulfurous," meaning "sour." In 1847, Sulphur Springs was renamed Sulphur after its location on the upper course of the Arkansas River near present-day Tulsa, Oklahoma. The first target holders were erected in 1847 by federal troops stationed at Fort Smith in Arkansas during their war against Mexico. These shooters used cutlasses and pistols to hit targets outfitted with heavy iron plates that measured 42 feet (12 m) long and 26 inches (60 cm) wide at shoulders height. Prior to this time, shotguns were only effective when fired from a stationary position; it was not until 1865 that riflemen began using them to shoot targets up close at distances up to 100 yards (91 m).
