West Monroe is a town in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become West Monroe was first settled by French colonists in 1718. In 1812, west of modern-day Monroe, General James K. Polk's forces fought an engagement with Spanish troops near what is now downtown Monroe. In 1814, the U.S. acquired what are now eastern and northern Livingston Parish lands from Spain for $5 million dollars as part of the Treaty of New Orleans following their victory over France in the Battle of San Jacinto at Palo Alto Creek on February 6, 1814. In 1865, when Confederate general Peculiar Butler surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th after a five-week long battle that ended with 3200 deaths and 12 thousand injuries (including 5000 killed by Union soldiers), President Abraham Lincoln awarded Butler a pension which he accepted and used to purchase 640 acres (24 hectares) north of present-day West Monroe for $10 per acre ($160 per km²). The land became known as Butler's Forest after him. This parcel has been owned by various families since then including Johnson Brothers Farms who sold it to businessman Sam Jones in 1974; and current owners John openings who operate it as a Bed & breakfast Inn/Bakery called 'Oasis'. The town began to form around this new development with businesses opening up and residents moving into the area until World War II when most of the population left for war effort activities elsewhere within America or abroad due to rationing efforts by the federal government during that time period known as "the Great Depression". During WWII there were also many military bases located in and around West Monroe such as Fort Polk which housed Sherman tanks; Camp Claiborne which held ammunition supply convoys; Fort Gibson which served as an artillery range; Lafayette Army Airfield where bombers flew during World War II; and Naval Station Vermilion Bay where submarines were built during WWII before being mothballed or sold off beginning in 1949(). Afterward things resumed more normalcy with businesses closing down but gradually some people moved back into town who had taken advantage of its post-war opportunities including incorporations ( incorporation numbers are posted online) such as: Baptist Church (1948); Masonic Lodge #1(1953); First Baptist Church (1965); St Joseph Catholic church (1974); Holy Cross School District No 1(1978); Crestwood Nursing Home Incorporated(1981).
