Westwego, Louisiana is a town located in Morgan County, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The original town of Westwego was founded in 1872 by Danish immigrants. The name originated from an allusion to Weymouth on the MA coast where farming and fishing were once popular pursuits. The first post office in Westwego was established in 1875. In 1909, the town became a city when it annexed the neighboring villages of White Sulphur Springs and North Little Rock. In 1912, East Baton Rouge Parish merged into Morgan County and Westwego became its seat; however, East Baton Rouge Parish continued to exist as a separate municipality until 1974 when it merged with Jefferson Parish to form New Orleans-Metairie metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,849 people residing in the town limits: 806 males and 514 females. Of those 724 residents age 25 and over (85%), 603 (99%) were white; 146 black or African American residents (3%); 2 Hispanic or Latino residents (2%); 11 households (4%) consisted of one person; 0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older; and 0% had someone who was 65 years old but did not have any children under 18 living with them

The history of Westwego, Louisiana can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area that now includes Westwego was originally settled by Acadians, who arrived in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. One of the first Acadian families to settle in what is now Westwego was the Leduc family. The Leducs were a French-Canadian dynasty that ruled over parts of present-day Louisiana from 1784 until their expulsion from Canada in 1830. In 1824, Nathaniel Wells founded a small village on the banks of the Mississippi River near Thibodaux. Wells named his community after his paternal grandparents, John and Catherine Wells. In 1827, Nathaniel and his wife Rebecca formed a partnership with James Fenton and began trading goods along the river at Thibodaux for French goods destined for New Orleans. By 1829, they had erected a wooden stockade around their village which served as its first town hall and jail. During the early days of American independence, Lafayette Parish belonged to France because it had been ceded to Spain during France’s defeat at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. When America became an independent country, America included this parish within its boundaries as part of New Orleans Parish. However, many Acadians living in Lafitte City refused to leave their homes and continue governing themselves under Spanish rule as they did before British rule ended in 1763; instead they formed an unofficial government known as La Pointe du Lac (the tip of lac) Republic which functioned until 1840 when it too surrendered to American authority. In 1804 Nicolas Boudreaux purchased 1/8 acre (0.25 hectares) adjacent to Thérèse Le Moyne’s land grant extending downriver from Baton Rouge for $100 per acre (2 hectares). Boudreaux named his property Westwego after Weygandt County seat onthe eastern bank of the Mississippi River where he lived while farming corn and other crops near Thibodaux Junction Railroad Station according to one source but another source claims he named it after Captain Isaac Chasseur d’Almeida who fought against Spanish forces at Veracruz during War Of 1812 according to secondary sources It is also said that Captain Chasseur d’Almeida may have been responsible for founding Algiers who later became capital cityof Algeria
Westwego was organized in 1871 as a town in what is now Webster Parish. The first post office was established in 1872, and the first store opened in 1875. In 1895, Westwego became an incorporated town. In 1957, it became a parish.
