The holster industry in Augusta, Maine began in the early 1800s. Early holster makers were primarily civilians who produced holsters for their own use or for the use of friends and family. In 1821, W.W. Penney & Sons created the first retail holster company in Augusta. The company was responsible for selling holsters direct to consumers throughout the town. By 1830, there were three major holster companies operating in Augusta: Penney’s Holster Company, John Weems Holster Company, and J.H. Beattie & Son Ltd. By 1851, hucksters had become a large part of market share for retail holsters in Maine due to their popularity as self-defense weapons and their relative availability on the local market. As huckster production increased, so did demand for quality leatherworking supplies needed to make high-quality holsters. This led to a growth of local businesses that specialized in making custom holsters specifically for police officers and other law enforcement personnel across Maine. In 1861, the state of Maine passed a bill designating firearms as “Secured Property” which made it illegal to possess any weapon without a license from the state government. As a result of this law change, many civilian handgun manufacturers stopped producing handguns and instead started producing revolvers only – which caused much consternation among law enforcement officials who continued to require handguns be carried with them when travelling outside of Maine). Consequently, most huckster production ceased around this time as well (although some individuals still produce high-quality knives using traditional methods).

In recent years, Augusta has seen some growth thanks to its expanding agricultural sector and growing tourism industry which has helped contribute towards increased spending by local businesses and individuals alike. This has led to today’s widespread adoption of holster technology by police departments around the world!
