SouthPortland began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location – it lies between two major rivers that provide easy access to transportation and resources such as seafood and lumber. The beauty of its natural surroundings soon caught the attention of both locals and outsiders alike, which led to development along Main Street beginning in 1810. By 1825, most of what is now downtown South Portland had been built including much of present day Pioneer Square.
