On December 12, 1828, the first group of white people arrived in what is now South Portland. They were led by Captain John Deere and his family. The town was named after Deere's brother-in-law General Nathan Hale. The town grew quickly, and by 1830 there were over 100 residents. By 1835, the population had grown to 300 people, and in 1849 it reached 400 people. In 1865, South Portland became a part of Maine when that state was created.
