When South Portland residents first became interested in firearms, they likely did so to protect their homes from raiders. South Portland, Maine is a small town in the heart of the state of Maine. The population was 9,387 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern shore of Penobscot Bay and has a history dating back to before European settlement. South Portland is known for its seafood and locally made goods, as well as its beaches and waterfalls. The town was founded in 1822 by John Butternut and others who were looking for a place to settle after they lost their land in what is now Quebec. The town grew quickly because of its location and access to resources such as fresh water and codfish from Penobscot Bay. In 1830, South Portland became incorporated with a meetinghouse and school house being built on present-day Main Street. In 1848, the first store was opened in South Portland by Elisha Hale. By 1860, there were 10 businesses in town with a population of over 100 people. Over time, many different businesses have closed down but some that survive include: First National Bank (1890), Gulfstream Paper Mill (1930), Marine Fisheries Associates (1970), Bangor Savings Bank (1991), Pacific Life Insurance Company (2007) and The Gilded Lily Restaurant & Bar (2013). During World War II, SouthPortland played an important role as one of 131 towns within the United States vital to production via war industries such as munitions manufacturing plants along with shipbuilding yards across Penobscot Bay which produced vessels for America’s largest navy during World War II; USS Decatur(DDG-8) at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; USS Waccamaw(AGU-10) at Bath Iron Works; USS Salmon Falls(AO-1) at Astoria Navy Yard while also creating jobs in related trades such as fishing net making from lobster traps salvaged from ships sunk during the war years; electricians building wire fences around airfields used for training flights during WW2; carpenters repairing roadsides throughout New England using planks taken from downed trees or logs when available; machinists building propellers for torpedoes manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Inc.; fishermen removingcod from Penobscot Bay using longboats manned by men or women skilled in this activity called “cod pulling” which utilized bateaux pulled by horses
