South Portland, Maine is a town located in the U.S. state of Maine, on the Atlantic coast. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. It is portions of two towns: South Portland and Brunswick. In 1840, part of what is now downtown Brunswick was added to SouthPortland after that township's creation; and soon afterward, a landing point for boat passengers called "Brunswick Point" became an important center for goods shipping into New England from Canada and Europe alongPenobscot Bay. This commercial development helped create a large electorate for local officials in those days - including one mayor who served four terms! In 1850-1851, during America's Civil War (the war that ended slavery), many men serving in the Union army made their homes inSouthPortland-including General Ambrose Burnside who later served as Governor of Maine before becoming president Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War! After America's Civil War ended in 1865/66 with Confederate victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House near Richmond Virginia federal troops moved into North Carolina withdrawn most military equipment & civilians left disbanding all militias there so Mounted Police wouldn't be used against unarmed citizens again
The town of South Portland, Maine was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith. The town grew rapidly and by 1825 it had a population of over 1,000 people. The first post office in the town was established in 1827. In 1829, the town seceded from Massachusetts and became a separate state. The first mayor of South Portland was Jabez Woods. In 1904, the United States Post Office moved from its original location at 2 Main Street to 4 High Street in South Portland. In 1916, the American Red Cross built a shelter in South Portland for residents who were displaced during World War I. In 1935, the U.S. Post Office moved to its current location at 5 High Street in downtown SouthPortland after being located at 7 Main Street for more than 25 years due to its age and lack of popularity.
