Hartford Police Sergeant Michael O’Malley told reporters: “ Adam Lanza had expressed interest in purchasing a rifle several times prior to this shooting… This is not an act of random violence or chance events; it was purposeful planning by this young man who knew what he was doing." Despite being known as one of America's safest cities, South Portland saw its share of tragedies in 2018. On October 5th, two people were killed when a gunman opened fire at The Cliffs Resort & Casino in nearby Bangor. Two days later, an 18-year-old shot and killed his mother and then committed suicide inside her apartment complex in Easton Township. Just four weeks later on November 16th, gunfire erupted during a fight between rival groups near the intersection of Commercial Boulevard & Water Street in downtown South Portland. Eight people were injured before police arrived to take control. Afterwards, officers discovered three more rifles hidden inside a car belonging to one of the perpetrators... all evidence that suggests Lanza planned these murders meticulously ahead of time. On December 14th, 2018 however none of those tragedies felt as deadly as what took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School mere blocks away from where Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults just days earlier. In fact even though there have been shootings throughout town since then (including one incident which left 3 people dead), no one has ever been convicted for any role in bringing about Adam Lanza’s death - despite overwhelming evidence pointing towards them being responsible for his rampage through Newtown last December 15th. In light of this tragedy – which still remains unsolved – it is important to remember how much support local gun communities have received from both political leaders and everyday citizens alike throughout their history here in South Portland... especially given how easy it is for someone likeAdam Lanza to purchase a weapon without any background checks or precautions taken by anyone involved... something that should never be allowed anywhere else!

South Portland was first settled in 1636 by Puritan families from Connecticut. The original name of the town was "Farming Village". They named their new community "Farming Village" in honor of their old home state (Connecticut). Over time, other towns and villages were established within several miles of Farming Village including Westborough (now Northborough), Easton, Amherstburg (now Amherst), Norwalk and Agawam (now Wellesley). In 1824, Farming Village was renamed SouthPortland because it lay on both sides of a river that served as a useful border between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. At that time there were few transportation options between those two states so this name seemed like an appropriate choice for a small town located next to one of the most important waterways in New England. Over time SouthPortland experienced some growth and development due to its location as well as its close proximity to major highways such as Interstate 95 and Route 128. In 1984, local residents voted to become an incorporated municipality which made them responsible for all aspects of municipal government including planning and building ordinances; zoning regulations; streetlights; garbage collection; public works; police services; fire services;and library programs. Today’sSouthPortland has seen significant revitalization over the past few decades thanks in large part to various economic factors such as job growth along with rising sea levels that have threatened some parts of town more than others. One example is recent construction projects such as the replacement of aging water towers with taller versions that allow for more flooding during heavy rains while also reducing future water needs on Point Lookout Road since it will now be much closer to sea level!
