Waterville is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Waterville is part of the Bangor Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Waterville were people who came overland from New England in 1798. They built a small cabin on the east side of the river and named it "Waterville". Their neighbors called them "the Housers". In 1803, a party of men led by Capt. John Hull and Stephen Ayer discovered gold near present-day Waterville. The town quickly became known as "Goldsboro" because of this discovery. Some residents decided to name their town after themselves, such as Seth Chase (who got his name from Seth Allen), Jonathan Gorham, John Weeks, and Timothy Gorham (whose father had been captain of an English ship that chartered to transport gold miners to America). However, most residents adopted the names given to them by their neighbors or friends: Waterville for Captain Hull's house on Main Street; Gorham for Gorham's mill on Monadny Lake; Weeks for his family's farm on South Water Street; Ayer for Ayer's store on North Water Street; and Chase for Captain Hatch's house on White Road. By 1800, there were more than 100 people living in Waterville. In 1802-1803, General James Kossuth discovered shoals of whales off the coast of Maine while he was operating along the Gulf Stream during his trip around Cape Horn. This gave rise to another nickname for Waterville – "Whaleville." In 1806-1807 when Lieutenant Samuel Eliot captured HMS Pembroke off Cumberland Island during Great Britain's War with France, he named one of her guns after Waterville – which made everyone in town very happy! In 1824-1825 , voters approved building a schoolhouse at what is now Main Street which served as the nucleus of what would become Waterville Academy later that year. The first teacher teaching school in waterville was Miss Ann Moody who taught from November 25th until December 7th 1830 . There are also some early references to mills located southward along Monadny Lake including Hepburns Mills & Mill Site #1 mentioned October 10th 1700 as Waverly Dam being dammed up with plenty water power but no lock oraraoh about it however dam site does exist today if you go out there its worth exploring
