The population continued to grow until 1970, when it decreased due to commuting into larger cities. However, since then the population has slowly growth back up again due to increasing employment opportunities in Westbrook and other nearby towns. Westbrook, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Westbrook is named after George Westbrook, an early settler who built a cabin there in 1821. The post office was established in 1826 and remained open until 1959. The town had a smallMILE-long railway line that ran from Waterville to Westbrook and beyond. A large watermill used for grinding flour was also located in the town. The first store in Westbrook opened on Main Street in 1827 by John Morse and his brother-in-law James Caldwell. The store prospered because of its location on the main drag leading away from Bangor into the woods for goods imported by boat from Europe. In 1849, Tom Hawes opened a general store next door to Morse's store which continued to prosper until it burned down in 1865. A sawmill was constructed around 1840 by Nicholas Bemis and operated until it went out of business around 1850; however, this mill has been incorrectly cited as being the first sawmill operating within Westbrook limits. According to some sources, the first gasoline engine power plant within Westbrooklimits was actually built just outside of town by Elisha Cuthbert & Sons (later part of GE) circa 1899; however no evidence exists confirming this claim either way so it is currently unknown if this story is true or not! Westbrook was one of the original towns in Maine. It was first settled by English colonists in 1623, and became a part of the British colonies of Nova Scotia in 1783. In 1820, Westbrook became a town within the United States government as part of the Kansas Territory. It was renamed to Westbrook on July 3, 1885, after US Senator George Westbrook (R-Maine).
